We tend to overestimate how the degree to which our own behavior, attitudes, beliefs, and so on are shared by other people.

This may be because our friends and people we spend time with are indeed like us, and we use the Availability Heuristic to deduce that many other people are similar (our own beliefs, etc. are also very available). When there is limited information on which to base a good estimate, then what we believe is a fair alternative to a wild guess. We will use false consensus more when we attribute our own behavior to external factors as these are the same factors which presumed to affect others. False consensus also helps reinforce my own motivations.

Around a thousand years ago, a group of people gathered in a Peruvian brewery, drank copious amounts of brew, smashed their drinking vessels to the ground and torched the building as part of a complicated abandonment ritual, according to a new study.

The authors of the study in the latest Proceedings of the Academy of Sciences believe the structure was one of the earliest and largest state-sponsored breweries in the Andes.

They also discovered that a group of elite women served as the brewmasters, unusual both for ancient times and even for today.

Er lijkt niet meteen een einde te komen aan de rellen in de Parijse voorsteden. Het geweld breidt zich uit naar andere steden. De rellen zijn geen verrassing voor socioloog Said Boumama. « Verrassend is alleen dat de explosie zo lang uitbleef, » zegt hij.

Said Bouamama was in het begin van de jaren '80 één van de organisatoren van de zogenaamde 'Marches des Beures'. Die marsen voor gelijkheid, zoals hij ze zelf liever noemt, brachten tienduizenden jonge allochtonen op de been. De beweging viel al snel uitéén, maar slaagde er wel in om de dagelijkse problemen van de allochtone jongeren op de agenda te zetten. Twintig jaar later lijkt er echter niet veel veranderd.

-- Wie zijn die jongeren?

Said Bouamama: « Die jongeren maken deel uit van de arbeidersklasse van vandaag. Op de televisie worden ze vooral benaderd als migrantenjongeren, maar het gaat om een gemengde jeugd die vandaag op straat komt. Het gaat om jongeren die al lang hun woede opkroppen. De dood van hun twee kameraden was de druppel die de emmer deed overlopen. Het is een opstand tegen de situatie in de volkse wijken die al twintig dertig jaar achteruitgaat. »

-- De dood van de twee jongens was dus slechts een aanleiding?

« Wat die jongens overkwam is een grote onrechtvaardigheid want hun recht op leven werd geschonden. Maar in de wijken wordt een hele resem rechten geschonden: recht op werk, recht op een waardige woning. De wijken staan onder permanente politiecontrole en krijgen te maken met pesterijen. Dat is jong zijn en migrant in het Frankrijk van vandaag. Het lijkt wel alsof men die jongeren afschildert als de nieuwe gevaarlijke klasse. »

-- Hun woede is zeer agressief. Is dat de enige manier waarop ze zich kunnen uiten?

« Die jongeren proberen al jaren op verschillende manieren de aandacht te trekken op hun situatie. Maar aangezien de economie steeds liberaler wordt en aangezien armen niet bepaald centraal staan in de economische keuzes, wordt er niet naar hen geluisterd. Dat is ook de verantwoordelijkheid van de verschillende politieke krachten die geen rekening houden met de bevolking van deze wijken. De werkloosheidsgraad is er hoger dan 40 %. Dat is vier keer meer dan het nationaal gemiddelde. Eén op twee jongeren is werkloos. Dat is onleefbaar. De armoede neemt schrikwekkende proporties aan. Als daar dan ook nog eens de dagelijkse pesterijen van politie bijkomen, krijg je een pot die klaar is om over te koken. Vandaar mijn conclusie dat het niet verrassend is dat al die wagens in brand worden gestoken, maar wel dat een echte explosie zo lang uitbleef. Ik denk dat de woede van de jongeren zich heel lang tegen henzelf heeft gekeerd. Ze vechten onder elkaar. Over dat soort geweld wordt zelden gesproken. »

-- De situatie is niet nieuw, maar sleept al vele jaren aan. Waarom doet de regering hier niets aan?

« De regering heeft andere prioriteiten: de economie hervormen in liberale zin. Dat betekent dat er steeds minder overblijft voor zaken die niet dadelijk iets opbrengen zoals onderwijs, sociale woningen en gezondheidszorg. De politieke keuzes zorgen er voor dat wat nog restte om te kunnen overleven, verwaarloosd wordt. »

-- Wie goed geschoold is, kan ontsnappen aan die situatie, zegt men. Wat loopt er verkeerd in het onderwijs?

« Ik denk niet dat het hier een probleem van scholing is, maar een kwestie van overleven. Als je twintig bent en je ziet dat 40 % van de buurtbewoners zonder werk zit, dat de wijk achteruitgaat, dat je broers met hun diploma toch geen werk vinden, dan weet je dat dit geen probleem van onderwijs is. Wie over vorming en scholing begint, wijst eigenlijk de jongerne en de ouders zelf met de vinger. Ik ben daar niet van overtuigd. De ouders doen wat ze kunnen in de moeilijke omstandigheden waarin ze leven. »

-- Is de werkloosheid dan een gevolg van discriminatie?

« Voor de migrantenjongeren is het evident dat er gediscrimineerd wordt. Een discriminatie die toeneemt door de economische crisis. Jobs worden zeldzaam en de eersten die aan de kant worden gezet zijn de migrantenjongeren. »

-- Wat vindt u van de reactie van minister Sarkozy die de jongeren 'uitschot' noemde?

« Dat is onaanvaardbaar en schandalig. Zie daar iemand die in een eerste reflex na de dood van de jongeren de politie in bescherming neemt zonder het onderzoek af te wachten. Die zich begeeft in de wijken en zegt dat er goede en slechte jongeren zijn, uitschot en geen uitschot. Hij houdt er geen rekening mee dat hij daar met mensen te maken heeft. Ik verdenk Sarkozy er van dat hij het onveiligheidsgevoel wil aanscherpen want bij de verkiezingen hoopt hij daar garen bij te spinnen. »

-- Hoe kan er een einde komen aan het geweld?

« Ik denk dat alle democraten, alle verenigingen, alle politieke partijen die het niet eens zijn met deze situatie, nu op straat moeten komen. Ik wacht vol ongeduld op bijeenkomsten of grote betogingen zodat dit geen zaak blijft van jongeren tegenover politieagenten, maar een politiek probleem dat de grenzen van de volkse wijken overstijgt. »

-- Ziet u al iets bewegen?

« Helaas niet, nee. Ik schud al enkele dagen aan de boom om iets te doen bewegen. Ik hoop op een grote betoging die alle politieke krachten van extreemlinks tot democraten samen brengt. »

-- Hoe kan zo'n beweging ontstaan?

« Momenteel vragen we aan iedereen die zich het lot van die jongeren aantrekt om de hoofdkwartieren van politieke partijen en vakbonden te bombarderen met mails. Zij moeten zich nu uitspreken. »

-- Denkt u dat deze rellen georganiseerd zijn?

« Er zullen wel kleine groepjes jongeren zijn die elkaar ontmoeten en die hun acties afspreken, maar een echte organisatie zit er niet achter. Het is een spontane en richtingloze opstand. De jongeren zullen de rekening moeten betalen. »

-- Kan het resultaat van het onderzoek naar de dood van de twee jongeren een gunstig effect hebben?

« Het onderzoek zal zeggen dat de politie geen schuld treft. Dat zal niet de eerste keer zijn want we zitten al aan honderden dergelijke sterfgevallen. In de meerderheid van de gevallen worden de politieagenten vrijgesproken. Wettige zelfverdediging, luidt meestal het verdict. Ik geloof niet in zo'n onderzoek. »

Building peace in Colombia was the focus of the international conference in Chicago where Orlando Valencia, an Afro-Colombian activist, was invited to speak about his community’s struggle to defend its land from agribusiness interests and paramilitary forces. He never showed up.

Valencia was representing Jiguamiandó, a “peace community” that has declared itself neutral in the country’s ravaging civil war and has no alignment with either right-wing paramilitary or left-wing guerrilla factions. Displaced by violence in 1997, the community won the right to return in 2000 under collective land rights granted to Afro-indigenous people. But during their absence the land had been illegally planted with African palm, as part of a large-scale palm oil export operation. Since then, the community has been struggling to claim their land while paramilitaries continue to protect the illegal agriculture, which poses a serious threat to the surrounding Choco rainforest.

A week before he was to leave for Chicago, Valencia was denied a visa, for the second time, by the U.S. Embassy in Bogata. Fed up with the process, he started the long trek back home. A group of fellow Colombians and international observers accompanied him.

World's earliest observatory discovered

TAIYUAN, Oct. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese archaeologists said they have found the world earliest observatory, dated back to some 4,100 years ago, in north China's Shanxi Province.

The ancient observatory in the Taosi relics site in Shanxi Province is at least 2,000 years older than the 1,000-year-old observatory built by the Maya in central America, said He Nu, a research follow with the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

He told Xinhua on Sunday that the observatory, built at the endof the primitive society, "was not only used for observing astronomical phenomena but also for sacrificial rites."

The remains of the observatory, in the shape of a semicircle 40meters in diameter in the main observation platform and 60 meters in diameter in the outer circle, were made by rammed earth in three circles.

Archaeologists inferred that 13 stone pillars, at least four meters tall, stood on the foundation of the first circle originally, forming 12 gaps between them.

"The ancient people observed the direction of sunrise through the gaps and distinguished the different seasons of the year," said He.

In order to test the conjecture, archaeologists spent a year and a half simulating the observations of the ancients at the site.

To their surprise, the seasons marked by observation at the site were only one or two days different from the seasonal division of the traditional Chinese calendar, which is still widely used in rural China.

Europe study shows climate risks

Mediterranean and mountain regions of Europe will be hardest hit by the changes set to affect the continent's natural resources this century

That is the conclusion of a Europe-wide assessment that highlights the threat posed by climate change.

The Mediterranean will be at increased risk of forest fires, water shortages, loss of agricultural land and from its tree species shifting northward.

The study, by an international team, appears in the journal Science.

The assessment set out to forecast the impact of climate change, shifting land use and socio-economic factors on Europe during the 21st Century.

It simulated the effects of changes in soil fertility and water availability as the climate changes and humans respond, for example, by modifying land use patterns or moving to new areas.

Finding creativity
Without paying careful attention to your child's inner process, it is easy to miss his creativity in everyday life. While the teacher complains that he is spacing out during her presentation on the structure of our government, your child may be generating possible solutions for eliminating wasteful governmental spending. While your child appears to be trying to get out of going to his music lessons, he may be singing Broadway show tunes in his mind with perfect tempo and memory for all the words. If a child isn't doing what he's supposed to be doing, we commonly think he is misbehaving. Welcome to the Gallery, eventually this will be the place to see all the videos you're never likely to get a look at on the mainstream media. It's hoped that all you radical types will be inspired to pick up a video camera and tell everyone your point of view.

The first of what we hope will be many films to appear on this site is Capitalism & Other Kids' Stuff. It was made by four socialists on one freezing Saturday afternoon in a church hall at Hebburn in the north east of England. On a budget of £80 which was spent on travel expenses the cost of hiring the hall and some cold cheese pasties the film may be rough and ready but it's hoped that it says something real to you. The ideas it proposes are one's you're unlikely to see on any TV show, art house play or even the news networks.

The original version or 'the white version' as we now call it - nothing to do with the Beatles album - has now been replaced by a newer version known as the CGI version. This is a lot more colourful and has more jazzy bits! It's hoped that this does not detract from the points raised in the video. Also, it has to be pointed out that this is still not the final edit as we're waiting for some great artwork done by Mat Brady, which will be included in the video. Mat is a real talent and we are delighted that he has joined the team.

In 1876, Marx's collaborator, Frederich Engels, offered a prophetic caveat: "Let us not . . . flatter ourselves overmuch on account of our human conquest over nature. For each such conquest takes its revenge on us. . . . At every step we are reminded that we by no means rule over nature like a conqueror over a foreign people, like someone standing outside of nature--but that we, with flesh, blood, and brain, belong to nature, and exist in its midst. . . ."

With its never-ending emphasis on production and profit, and its indifference to environment, transnational corporate capitalism appears determined to stand outside nature. The driving goal of the giant investment firms is to convert natural materials into commodities and commodities into profits, transforming living nature into vast accumulations of dead capital.

This capital accumulation process treats the planet's life-sustaining resources (arable land, groundwater, wetlands, forests, fisheries, ocean beds, rivers, air quality) as dispensable ingredients of limitless supply, to be consumed or toxified at will. Consequently, the support systems of the entire ecosphere--the Earth's thin skin of fresh air, water, and top soil--are at risk, threatened by global warming, massive erosion, and ozone depletion. An ever-expanding capitalism and a fragile finite ecology are on a calamitous collision course.

It is not true that the ruling politico-economic interests are in a state of denial about this. Far worse than denial, they have shown utter antagonism toward those who think the planet is more important than corporate profits. So they defame environmentalists as "eco-terrorists," "EPA gestapo," "Earth Day alarmists," "tree huggers," and purveyors of "Green hysteria" and "liberal claptrap."

Missie

Kif Kif wil meebouwen aan een interculturele samenleving die de actieve participatie van àlle burgers in onze democratische rechtstaat bevordert. Via onafhankelijke, interactieve en sensibiliserende initiatieven wil Kif Kif een diversiteit aan stemmen en verhalen een forum bieden.

Algemene doelstellingen

Uit deze missie putten wij de volgende algemene doelstellingen:

1. Een diversiteit aan stemmen en verhalen een forum bieden.
2. De actieve participatie van álle burgers bevorderen.
3. Stereotiepe en negatieve beeldvorming ontkrachten.
4. Stimuleren tot kritische reflectie.
5. De onafhankelijkheid en het unieke karakter van de organisatie bewaken.

Uitgangspunten

Bij het realiseren van de missie en de doelstellingen vertrekken wij vanuit het volgende referentiekader:

Progressief
Kif Kif wil niet lijdzaam toekijken hoe alles bij het oude blijft. De hervorming van een aantal maatschappelijke aspecten en instellingen dringt zich hoe langer hoe meer op. Dit betekent dat we als organisatie in vele gevallen een standpunt moeten durven innemen. Daarom willen we er op een doordachte manier naar streven om discussies te bevorderen. We mogen niet aan de kant blijven staan, maar richten ons op vooruitgang en vernieuwing zodat iedereen een gelijkwaardige plaats in een rechtvaardige samenleving kan innemen. De samenleving zoals we die vandaag kennen is niet dezelfde als ongeveer dertig jaar terug. De migratie, de steeds toenemende mobiliteit, versnelde communicatiemiddelen, globalisering, enz. maken dat de diversiteit in de samenleving voortdurend toeneemt. Dit brengt nieuwe onrechtvaardigheden en ongelijkheden met zich mee die op een innovatieve, creatieve en eigentijdse manier benaderd moeten worden. Kif Kif wil zich hiervoor actief engageren en wil haar sympathisanten de mogelijkheid bieden om hieraan mee te werken.

Pluralistisch
Kif Kif stelt zich van bij de start open en pluralistisch op. Dit betekent dat we open staan voor eventuele samenwerking met andere democratische verenigingen. Iedere mens is gelijk en moet, ongeacht de sociaal-culturele achtergrond, gelijke kansen krijgen om zich maximaal te ontplooien en op een volwaardige manier kunnen deelnemen aan het maatschappelijke leven. Niemand mag uitgestoten of achtergesteld worden omwille van sociale achtergrond, huidskleur, nationaliteit, verstandelijke of lichamelijke handicap, seksuele geaardheid, enz. Dit betekent ook dat Kif Kif zich niet tot een welbepaalde etnisch-culturele groep richt. Kif Kif wil de leden van de verschillende gemeenschappen met elkaar in contact brengen. Daarnaast willen we een einde maken aan de strakke opdeling tussen ‘allochtoon’ en ‘autochtoon’, tussen ‘Vlaming’ en ‘vreemdeling’ en tussen man en vrouw. Kif Kif streeft naar een samenleving waarin diversiteit geen holle slogan blijft en in volle vrijheid beleefd kan worden. We leven samen in eenzelfde geografische, institutionele en economische ruimte en kunnen maar beter leren om dit op een vreedzame en respectvolle manier te doen.

Solidair
Gezien de toenemende internationale ongelijkheden, wil Kif Kif over rechtvaardige en democratische alternatieven voor het huidige economische wereldsysteem nadenken. Aangezien het een wereldwijde onrechtvaardigheid betreft, hechten wij veel belang aan grensoverschrijdende solidariteit. We besteden dan ook ruim aandacht aan onderwerpen als migratie, mondialisering, armoede en oorlog. Kif Kif meent dat de socio-economische positie cruciaal is voor de maatschappelijke plaats die het individu inneemt of toebedeeld krijgt. We zijn ervan overtuigd dat de emancipatie van álle inwoners van Vlaanderen/België en de wereldbevolking een ijdele droom zal blijven zolang er geen structurele maatregelen op het vlak van onderwijs, tewerkstelling en huisvesting genomen worden. Het is evenzeer zo dat de socio-culturele achtergrond steeds vaker als uitsluitend mechanisme functioneert. Al te lang heeft de ‘linkerzijde’ het belang van de culturele identiteit verwaarloosd en onderschat. Kif Kif wil dan ook actief nadenken hoe die op een passende manier binnen een linkse wereldbeschouwing geplaatst kan worden.

Antiracistisch
Kif Kif profileert zich als uitgesproken antiracistisch en wenst het racisme in al haar verschijningsvormen te ontmaskeren en bespreekbaar te maken. We besteden daarom uitgebreid aandacht besteden aan de oorsprong, de werking, de functie en de gevolgen van het racistische mechanisme. Wanneer de situatie het vereist, zal Kif Kif ook bepaalde wanpraktijken aan de kaak stellen.

Democratisch
Kif Kif wil dat álle gemeenschappen gehoord worden en medezeggenschap hebben. Het kan niet langer dat er boven de hoofden van sommige groepen beslissingen worden genomen. De maatschappij moet in al haar facetten en op alle niveaus toegankelijk en bereikbaar zijn voor alle leden van die maatschappij. Het is duidelijk dat heel wat mensen worden geconfronteerd met een dagelijkse realiteit waarin ze zelfs niet eens als een volwaardige gesprekspartner worden beschouwd. Er moet werk gemaakt worden van een verregaande democratisering van een aantal structuren en instellingen. Alle burgers moeten op een actieve manier kunnen participeren in het beleid. Dit veronderstelt een eerlijke verdeling van de middelen en de mogelijkheden waarover iedereen moet beschikken, zowel op lokaal als globaal vlak. Kennis vormt de belangrijkste grondstof in de postindustriële samenleving. In ons streven naar een rechtvaardige maatschappij achten wij het dan ook van primordiaal belang om ook deze grondstof voor iedereen beschikbaar en bruikbaar te maken. Via de website en onze werking hopen wij hieraan een bescheiden maar zinvolle bijdrage te leveren.

Regarding cocaine addiction, Masters reported:

* Among 30,000 criminals in 24 cities studied by NIJ, those living where SiF is in water were more likely to have been using cocaine at the time of their arrest (H2SiF6 = 44%; Na2SiF6 = 43%; non-fluoridated = 32%).

Why would this be? While Masters stipulates that this might be due to increased lead uptake caused by silicofluorides, this is only partially the reason. Fluorides reduce thyroid hormone which is further compounded by increased lead uptake. Thyroid hormones regulate the critical pathways involved in alcoholism, as well as cocaine addiction and violent behaviour.

3P followed the adventures of the Treasure America team this summer as we visited the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in search of economic arguments against opening the refuge to oil development. The project successfully showed that tourism and other locally born industry could be a more viable long term economic strategy than oil exploration. The second part of the project was to produce a video for the rest of America demonstrating that drilling in the refuge will do next to nothing for our economy, and ironically, NOT drilling is a better economic stimulator.

Sleepwalking to the End of the Earth

Maria Gilardin writes: Floods, storms, and droughts. Melting polar ice, shrinking glaciers, oceans turning to acid. Scientists from the fields of glaciology, biology, meteorology, oceanography, and ecology reported seeing a dramatic rise over the last 50 years of all the indicators of climate change: increase in average world temperatures, extreme weather events, in the levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, and in the level of the oceans. The award winning environmental writer Geoffrey Lean wrote: “Future historians, looking back from a much hotter and less hospitable world . . . will puzzle over how a whole generation could have sleepwalked into disaster -- destroying the climate that has allowed human civilization to flourish over the past 11,000 years.” ... There is a set of figures that is both deeply depressing and hopeful. The last published World Bank data for CO2 emissions per capita indicate that, while every man, woman, and child in the US puts out 20 metric tons of CO2 per annum, those in the European Union put out 8 per person per year; China 2; and the output of Nigerians, who supply us with much of the oil that we burn into CO2, is zero -- below scale. In 2002, US-Americans used over 12,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per person; Europeans used less than half the amount, while the use in China is 987 kilowatt-hours per person. The US per-capita use of oil is twice that of the European Union, and more than 8 times that of China. What if China aspires to our standard of living? And why not, if we are not willing to cut back? Europe gets by with so much less CO2-output and energy-input, while already planning for further cuts. Where is the measure of global justice, between those who cause no harm and those whose extravagant use of fossil fuels harms everybody else? Regardless of who is driving this: industry, the military, religious fundamentalists, or any permutation of government, be it red or blue, responsibility for the approaching climate collapse will fall overwhelmingly on the United States. Since the US government and corporations not only refuse to cut back but are driving eco-collapse forward, it is up to ordinary people to refuse collaboration and to control the perpetrators. For us living in the US, the opportunity and time to make a difference that will affect the entire planet is now. (09/27/05)

This piece is based on two talks I gave in the spring of 2005 -- one at the O'Reilly ETech conference in March, entitled "Ontology Is Overrated", and one at the IMCExpo in April entitled "Folksonomies & Tags: The rise of user-developed classification." The written version is a heavily edited concatenation of those two talks.

Today I want to talk about categorization, and I want to convince you that a lot of what we think we know about categorization is wrong. In particular, I want to convince you that many of the ways we're attempting to apply categorization to the electronic world are actually a bad fit, because we've adopted habits of mind that are left over from earlier strategies.

I also want to convince you that what we're seeing when we see the Web is actually a radical break with previous categorization strategies, rather than an extension of them. The second part of the talk is more speculative, because it is often the case that old systems get broken before people know what's going to take their place. (Anyone watching the music industry can see this at work today.) That's what I think is happening with categorization.

What I think is coming instead are much more organic ways of organizing information than our current categorization schemes allow, based on two units -- the link, which can point to anything, and the tag, which is a way of attaching labels to links. The strategy of tagging -- free-form labeling, without regard to categorical constraints -- seems like a recipe for disaster, but as the Web has shown us, you can extract a surprising amount of value from big messy data sets.

A Short History
of the District Freiburg-Vauban, Germany

Abstract

In the South of Freiburg, on the former area of a French barrack site, Vauban, a new district is being developed for more than 5,000 inhabitants and 600 jobs. In 1993 the planning for the district started and in 2006, after three development phases, the district (38 hectares) will be completed. By the beginning of the year 2001, 2000 people had moved in.

The main goal of the project is to implement a city district in a co-operative, participatory way which meets ecological, social, economical and cultural requirements. The citizen's association "Forum Vauban e.V." (which has NGO-status) applied to coordinate the participation process and was recognized as its legal body by the City of Freiburg in 1995.

Through this process, many ressources became available: the biggest strength of the project is the involvement of people who are forming the district. Major driving forces for the development of Vauban are the ideas, the creativity and commitment of the people involved and the common goal to create a sustainable, flourishing neighbourhood.

In the fields of energy, traffic / mobility, building and participation / social interaction / public spaces new concepts were successfuly put into practice. In Freiburg-Vauban

the project's structure integrates legal, political, social and economical actors from grassroot-level up to the city administration,
all houses are built at least with improved low energy standard (65 kWh/m²a, calculated similar to the Swiss SIA 380/1 standard) plus at least 100 units with "passive house" (15 kWh/m²a) or "plus energy" standard (houses which produce more energy than they need, another 100 plus energy houses are planned),
a highly efficient co-generation plant (CHP) operating on wood-chips is operating since 2002 and connected to the district's heating grid.
solar collectors (about 450 m² until 2000) and photovoltaics (about 1200 m² until 2000) will be common "ornaments" on the district's roofs,
an ecological traffic / mobility concept is implemented with a reduced number of private cars to be parked in the periphery (about 40% of the households agreed to live without an own car), good public transport, a convenient car sharing system and a higher quality of living,
streets and other public spaces are playground for kids and places for social interaction,
joint building projects (about 30 groups of building owners, the Genova co-operative and the self-organized S.U.S.I.-settlement initiative) are the fertile ground for a stable district's community and rise ecological awareness,
a far-reaching participation and the social work organized by Forum Vauban gives voice to the people's needs and supports their initiatives, invents innovative ecological and social concepts and sets up a communication and participation structure including meetings, workshops, a three-monthly district news magazine, publications on special issues and internet-presentations.

The City of Freiburg has bought the area from the Federal Authorities and paid for this 20,000,000 €. As owner of the Vauban area, the City is responsible for its planning and development. The principle "Learning while Planning" adopted by the city allowed flexibility in reacting to new developments. This allowed an extended citizen participation that went far beyond the legal requirements and enabled citizens to participate even in the planning process. The citizen's association "Forum Vauban e.V." applied to coordinate the participation process and was recognized as its legal body by the City of Freiburg in 1995. From the very beginning, Forum Vauban did not want to restrict itself to merely organizing but also developed own suggestions for the planning and building of the district. Therefore the project was created and implemented together with the City of Freiburg and several other partners.

If we work together and act responsibly, we can minimize the harm we do each other, and maximize the benefits of solving our problems together. Freedom of action in a shared environment is a privilege, not a right. When we use Synergic Containment to protect a child, we are teaching the child that in a shared environment, he is free to act as long as those actions do not hurt others. We are teaching him to work together and act responsibly. Synergic containment is probably most attractive to parents because it is a technique to control adversary behavior when you love and care about the individual behaving adversarily. Most parents love and care about their children. Containment is about protecting both the victim and the aggressor. It does this by stopping adversary behavior. John Perkins, who worked from 1971 to 1981 for the international consulting firm of Charles T. Main, has written a book entitled Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. A former respected member of the international banking community, Perkins describes how as a highly paid professional, he helped the US cheat poor countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars by lending them more money than they could possibly repay and then taking over their economies. Perkins, who started writing the book twenty years ago, writes, “The book was to be dedicated to the presidents of two countries, men who had been clients whom I respected and thought of as kindred spirits—Jaime Roldós, president of Ecuador, and Omar Torrijos, president of Panama. Both had just died in fiery crashes. Their deaths were not accidental. They were assassinated because they opposed that fraternity of corporate, government, and banking heads whose goal is global empire. We economic hit men failed to bring Roldós and Torrijos around, and the other type of hit men, the CIA-sanctioned jackals who were always right behind us, stepped in.”

John Perkins goes on to write: “I was persuaded to stop writing that book. I started it four more times during the next twenty years. On each occasion, my decision to begin again was influenced by current world events: the US invasion of Panama in 1980, the first Gulf War, Somalia, and the rise of Osama bin Laden. However, threats or bribes always convinced me to stop.”

De Europese Commissie zette gisteren het licht op groen voor de invoer en verwerking van het genetisch gemanipuleerde koolzaad GT73 in de Europese Unie. BioForum en Velt vechten deze beslissing aan vanwege de ernstige risico's voor het milieu en de ggo-vrije landbouw in ons land. De invoer van dit koolzaad op de Europese markt zal leiden tot besmetting van niet-gemanipuleerde en natuurlijke plantensoorten.

Omdat de 25 lidstaten van de Europese Unie het niet eens raakten over de invoer van het genetisch gemanipuleerde koolzaad en noch de voorstanders, noch de tegenstanders de noodzakelijke meerderheid behaalden, hakte de Europese Commissie gisteren de knoop door. De Commissie besliste dat het genetisch gemanipuleerd koolzaad GT73 gedurende 10 jaar in de Europese lidstaten geïmporteerd mag worden om te worden verwerkt in veevoer en de industrie. Koolzaad GT73 is een product van het Amerikaanse bedrijf Monsanto en bestand tegen het onkruidbestrijdingsmiddel glyfosaat, beter bekend onder de merknaam RoundUp.

Nefast voor biodiversiteit en biolandbouw
Voor de biodiversiteit en de biologische landbouw in Vlaanderen is deze toelating nefast. Koolzaad wordt vaak geïmporteerd als intact zaad. Dat kan, bij lekkage bij overslag in een haven of transport, ontkiemen en zich vervolgens verder verspreiden in het milieu. In Japan is dat al gebeurd, zo toonde Greenpeace aan in een rapport uit mei 2005 . Daar wordt gemanipuleerd koolzaad niet verbouwd, maar geïmporteerd. Het zaad kiemt echter zo makkelijk dat dit koolzaad ondertussen welig groeit in havens en langs transportwegen.

Ongewenst zaad in Japanse havens nauwelijks te stoppen

Import van genetisch gemanipuleerd koolzaad heeft in Japan geleid tot verspreiding van dit gentech-gewas in het milieu. Onderzoekers hebben in acht van de tien grote Japanse havens in bermen en op de oevers koolzaad aangetroffen met genetisch gemanipuleerde eigenschappen. De planten zijn afkomstig van zaad dat gemorst is tijdens het transport. De onzinnigheid van het Nederlandse debat over teelt van gentech-gewassen wordt hierdoor onderstreept: eenmaal geïntroduceerd is gentech nauwelijks te stoppen.

Oilseed rape is a major crop for oil and animal feed

Oilseed rape (Brassica napus) is grown as a commercial crop in 50 countries with a combined harvest of over 40 million metric tonnes. The major producers of rapeseed in 2000 were China, Canada, India, Germany, France, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Canola is a genetic variation of B. napus with low levels of the natural rapeseed toxins glucosinolate and erucic acid. Canola is grown for its seed, which represents a major source of edible vegetable oil and pressed cake from oil extraction is also used in livestock feeds [1]. Oilseed rape is called canola in North America because the commercial oil-producing varieties were developed in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Monsanto’s canola GT73 was released commercially in 1995 in Canada [2] and the same strain, designated RT73, was released commercially in the United States in 1999 [3]. Japan approved the release of GT73 in 1995 [1] and Australia in 2003 [1]. Approval of all releases was based on essentially the same data sets.

GT73 in the EU

GT73 was notified for food use (as rapeseed oil) in the European Union (EU) in November 1997, under the simplified procedure of the Novel Foods Regulation. This means that rapeseed oil from GT73 was considered ‘substantially equivalent’ to its conventional counterpart and only required notification by the company, with no risk assessment or explicit approval process. Products made from rapeseed oil may include fried foods, baked foods and snacks.

An application for the import and use of GT73, excluding cultivation, was submitted in 1998 to the competent authority of the Netherlands. It gave this application a favourable opinion, and in January 2003 recommended that GT73 be approved. Several member States raised questions, including the UK, via its Advisory Committee on Releases to the Environment (ACRE) [4]. One of the concerns related to increased liver weights in rats fed GT73, compared with controls (see later).

The European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Scientific Panel on GMOs was requested to give its opinion on GT73 to resolve the uncertainties. In February 2004, EFSA gave its verdict that "GT73 oilseed rape is as safe as conventional oilseed rape and therefore the placing on the market of GT73 oilseed rape for processing and feed use is unlikely to have an adverse effect on human or animal health or, in the context of its proposed use, on the environment" [5].

Despite EFSA’s positive assessment of GT73 for feed and processing, the regulatory committee could not reach a qualified majority to authorize GT73 in June 2004. There were 43 votes in favour of approving GT73 (Belgium, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Netherlands, Latvia, Portugal, Slovakia, Sweden), 57 votes against (Austria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, UK), and 24 abstentions (Germany, Ireland, Spain, Slovenia) [6].

The application now passes to the Council of Ministers, which will make its decision very soon. If the Council cannot decide, the decision will rest with the European Commission, which has shown every sign of being in favour of approving GT73.

No event-specific characterization provided of transgene insert

GT73 (RT73) oilseed rape has been made tolerant to the herbicide glyphosate. Two transgenes were used. The first is the epsps gene coding for the enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), isolated from the common soil bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens, and is a glyphosate tolerant form of EPSPS. The EPSPS enzyme is part of the important shikimate pathway involved in the production of aromatic amino acids. When conventional canola plants are treated with glyphosate, the plants cannot produce the aromatic amino acids and die, but the enzyme encoded by the transgene is insensitive to glyphosate.

The second transgene in GT73 codes for a modified version of glyphosate oxidase (GOX) enzyme. The gox gene inserted into GT73 was isolated from the bacterium Ochrobactrum anthropi. The GOX enzyme accelerates the normal breakdown of the herbicide glyphosate into two compounds, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) and glyoxylate [1-3, 7]. In the absence of GOX, unacceptable levels of the herbicide may accumulate in the canola cake in animal feed.

The two transgenes were introduced into GT73 in a plasmid using the bacterium, Agrobacterium tumefaciens. The epsps and gox genes were each driven by the 35S promoter from a modified figwort mosaic virus and terminated with the 3’ (terminal) end of the pea rbcS E9 gene. The shikimate pathway is located in the chloroplast, so the chloroplast transit signal peptide sequence from the ribulose-biphosphate carboxylase and EPSPS of Arabidopsis is used to target the transgene products to the chloroplast. According to the company, only the primary genes and the sequences necessary for their activity in the plant cell were inserted into the canola cells while sequences from the plasmid such as the plasmid origin of replication and a gene for streptomycin resistance were lost from the commercial strain. Monsanto claimed that only one transgene insert is present [5], but the exact site of insertion was not reported [3, 5].

After evaluating the initial application submitted by Monsanto, some member States had requested additional information on the molecular aspects of the dossier. However, it is clear from the EFSA opinion that no independent tests were carried out, and the favourable opinion was based solely on information supplied by the company. Worryingly, the EFSA opinion [5] stated: "Comments raised by the Member States on specific molecular detection methodologies are presently not within the scope of the GMO Panel remit." In other words, there is no event-specific characterization, and therefore, no unique method for detecting this GMO for the purpose of identification or traceability, nor for addressing safety and liability issues that may arise.

The same EFSA dossier revealed that there are molecular changes at the insertion site, specifically 40 bp of the host genome is missing from GT73 while 22 bp of extraneous DNA of unknown origin is present at the 5’ junction of the insert. Nevertheless, these are considered not to pose a safety risk, based solely on the lack of homology to known toxins and allergens.

No molecular evidence of transgene stability

The transgenes were claimed by the company to be inserted in a stable and Mendelian fashion. ISIS has pointed out more than once that this claim of genetic stability - based on a failure to depart from ‘Mendelian ratios’ in the offpring generation - is not an acceptable criterion of genetic stability in the absence of independent ascertainment of the parental genotypes [8-13]. But EFSA has accepted the same criterion of transgene stability. It stated [5]: "The inserted DNA is inherited in a stable fashion in a nuclear chromosome as indicated by a number of parameters, e.g. predicted Mendelian segregation ratios (over several generations) from crosses between GT73 and conventional oilseed rape."

Extensive changes in the codons of transgenes from native genes ignored

Few of the regulatory documents have dealt with extensive alterations in the genetic codes of the native genes in the transgenes inserted into GT73, but all of them acknowledge that the codes were altered to enhance production of the bacterial gene products in the plant. The United States Food and Drug Administration consultation on canola GT73 provided a somewhat fuller description of the alterations in the bacterial DNA [14] while the patent for the EPSPS used in canola GT73 provides an extensive description of the code alteration [15]. Native genes from bacteria or humans do not function very well in crop plants because gene expression is influenced by codon bias specific to plants, mammals or bacteria. For that reason, the genetic code is altered by genetic engineers to achieve optimum gene expression. The optimized transgenes used in modified crops are mainly synthetic approximations of the real bacterial gene [16]. The synthetic genes are very different from the genes that evolved in bacteria and for that reason their characteristic recombination and mutation deserves special attention, as does its toxicology and allergenic potential. However, these factors have been largely ignored by the regulators.

Toxicology & allergenicity tests invalid

Even though the transgenes were altered in DNA sequence from the native bacterial genes, the proteins actually tested for mammalian toxicity and environmental safety were not isolated from GT73 but from the bacteria [5]. The bacterial surrogate enzymes were assumed to be identical to the enzymes produced in GT73 by cursory observations using techniques such as gel electrophoresis, N terminal analysis and enzyme activity, even though the presence of four anomalous amino acids were noted in the bacterial GOX [7]. Digestibility and degradability were tested with the bacterial proteins in simulated gastric fluid. And acute toxicity tests in mice were similarly done with the bacterial proteins.

Allergenicity tests were even less reliable, as they depended on theoretical evaluations based on assumptions that have been extensively questioned. For example, the Austrian government, based on an analysis of a number of applications for GMO approval in the EU, has concluded that no direct testing of potentially allergenic properties of GM corps and their products has been carried out [17]. Instead, conclusion that the protein in question is unlikely to exhibit allergenic properties is largely based on the following theoretical considerations: the newly introduced protein originates from a non-allergenic source; there is no significant sequence homology to known allergens; the protein will be rapidly digested in the intestine; the protein is not glycosylated; the expression level of protein in the GM crop is low; and the protein is not new to the human diet. The Austrian government has questioned each of these arguments and their underlying assumptions in the light of recent scientific data.

Consequently, these tests were neither meaningful nor valid. Empirical tests should have been conducted at the very least, on the real proteins isolated from GT73, not the bacterial surrogates.

The EFSA did include the warning that, "Since cross-reactivity between GOX and tropomyosin is not ruled out completely, persons allergic to shrimp meal should be aware of the possibility of hypersensitivity reaction when working with GT73 oilseed rape."

Inadequate inappropriate feeding trials with unexplained adverse effect

According to the EFSA opinion [5], "A satisfactory explanation was sought for the potentially adverse effect observed in one of the three rat feeding studies." We believe that this refers to the concerns expressed in regard to a confidential Monsanto feeding study that showed that rats fed GT73 experienced a 15% increase in their liver weights.

The UK’s ACRE and ACAF (Advisory Committee on Animal Feedingstuffs) had first raised concerns in March 2003 that the difference in the rats’ liver weights could not be explained, as volunteered by Monsanto, by higher glucosinolate concentration in the GM diets compared with the corresponding control diets [4]. Subsequently, Monsanto provided further information on this. But both ACRE and ACAF were "not satisfied" that Monsanto had supported their hypothesis. They demanded a satisfactory explanation for this potentially adverse response.

However, it appears that EFSA has dismissed those concerns. A list of uninformative feeding trials was presented on various animals of extremely short duration in which mostly body weights and sometimes, liver weights were recorded. No histology was carried out. Because there were no apparent gross pathological changes in the rat livers following examination at necropsy, EFSA considered the difference in liver weights an "incidental finding".

Contamination unavoidable

The regulatory reviews leading to commercialization of GT73 oilseed rape without exception discounted the rapid pollution of transgenic crops by wind spread pollen or by seed dispersal by animals or vehicles. This can happen during transport, without planting in the field. Escaped seed can germinate and potentially cross-pollinate with conventional oilseed rape, feral populations and wild relatives. ACRE had also raised concerns regarding seed spill, and was "not convinced that seed spill will not occur and that feral populations will not materialise" [4].

There is clear and growing evidence that widespread deployment of GM oilseed rape will lead to widespread contamination of conventional crops. A 2003 report showed that 95% of certified seed stock in western Canada were polluted to detectable levels with glyphosate tolerance genes and 52% exceeded the allowable contamination of certified seed [18]. The widespread deployment of GM oilseed rape for a variety of herbicides is leading to pyramiding of the genes for herbicide tolerance [19], creating crops that turn into fertile weeds that are difficult to eradicate.

Europe’s oilseed rape should keep its GM-free status before it too is contaminated beyond redemption.

He was referring to the web browser Mozilla Firefox, used as standard in the openDemocracy offices, yet new to him, a lifetime user of Microsoft's Internet Explorer. But Firefox is more than just a browser: it is a symbol of the democratic use of the internet.

When Firefox 1.0 launched in the UK back in November 2004, it made the headlines. It was the first time the release of a piece of computer software merited its own leader in a national newspaper (Britain's The Guardian). Online hipsters downloaded the web browser in droves, and the adoption of the open source technology snowballed. Mozilla Firefox now enjoys just over 8% of the browser market share – not bad in a market that has seen some of the most high profile monopoly actions in legal history.

ATLANTA - About 1.7 million U.S. children live in homes that have loaded and unlocked guns, according to what is described as the first comprehensive survey of gun storage in homes across the country.

The study, published Tuesday in the journal Pediatrics, found that 2.5 percent of children live in homes with loaded and unsecured firearms. Estimates from the early 1990s had put the percentage at 10 percent. The new results suggest a decline, but that doesn't mean there's cause for celebration, said Catherine Okoro, a study author.

"That's still too many children to be put at risk," said Okoro, an epidemiologist with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study is based on a 2002 telephone survey of about 241,000 adults and is the first to provide data on gun storage in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, its authors said.

Ilya Prigogine was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1977 for his contributions to nonequilibrium thermodynamics, particularly the theory of dissipative structures. He was born in Moscow, Russia on January 25, 1917. He obtained both his undergraduate and graduate education in chemistry at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles. He was Regental Professor and Ashbel Smith Professor of Physics and Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1967, he founded the Center for Statistical Mechanics, later renamed the Ilya Prigogine Center for Studies in Statistical Mechanics and Complex Systems. Since 1959, he was the director of the International Solvay Institutes in Brussels, Belgium. In 1989, Prigogine was awarded the title of Viscount by the King of Belgium. He was a member of 64 national and professional organizations, among which are the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The most recent of Prigogine's many international activities were Special Advisor to the European Community in Brussels, Belgium and Honorary Member of the World Commission of Culture and Development of UNESCO, chaired by Perez de Cuellar.

The main theme of the scientific work of Ilya Prigogine was a better understanding of the role of time in the physical sciences and in biology. He contributed significantly to the understanding of irreversible processes, particularly in systems far from equilibrium. The results of his work on dissipative structures have stimulated many scientists throughout the world and may have profound consequences for our understanding of biological systems.

The name Turtle Island Institute (TII) is taken from the Gary Snyder poem and Native American story about the earth being the back of a swimming turtle - disrupt the natural processes and we all drown.

Another version of turtle island comes from "The Way of the Hopi" - the first time much of their oral tradition was ever written down. The Hopi's have an oral tradition of being a number of clans - some of whom stayed south, some went here or there. They basically remember crossing the Bering Strait, and then traveling down to South America. In their tradition, the turtle island is North America, with four arms a head and a tail. One arm is Baja, another the Bay Area peninsula, another is Florida, the other long island is Nova Scotia. The tail leads town to Central America, the head the Bering Strait.

TII greatly respects the tales and cultural identities of indigenous peoples everywhere. By exchanging all kinds of knowledge - cultural, technological, spiritual, societal, etc. - every inhabitant of the planet will benefit. Toen ik jong was sprak men van een verziekte samenleving. In het begin van de jaren 70 zei men dat de wereld verkankerd was. Die wereldsamenleving kreeg recent de naam "globalisatie" en verdoezelt daarmee de gezegde van de 70-er jaren. In een lange zoektocht naar de oorzaak van ziekte en kanker kwam ik als arts/wetenschapper iets tegen wat mij beangstigde, doch voor mijn naasten doemdenkerij was.

Genesis betekent letterlijk wording.
Wording is iets dat in ontwikkeling is.
Genesis of Wording is daarmee iets dat ontstaat.
Maar als we het over de Genesis hebben, hebben we het wel over de evolutie en/of de groei van het leven, maar in feite is dit evolutieproces -dat weten wij ook- een levenscyclus onder de dekmantel van Moeder Aarde, die zoals de Bijbel verhaalt zeker eindig is.
Is het niet vreemd dat het leven zijn aanvang nam met ongecontroleerde groei — zoals kanker ook wel wordt genoemd?
Is het niet vreemd dat men het heeft over de cirkelgang des levens.
Zou dit kunnen betekenen dat de cirkelgang een cyclus is, die begint en eindigt met een woekering van ongecontroleerde groei?
Wat is ongecontroleerd meer dan onbeheerst?
Zo kijkend in de wereld om ons heen lijkt de onbeheersbaarheid steeds meer om zich heen te grijpen. Is dit ook een uiting van iets dat we kanker zouden kunnen noemen?
We spreken ook niet voor niets over een verkankerde samenleving.
Die wereldsamenleving is al denkend geleidelijk met bedachte wetten en leefregels (beheersingen) zo ontstaan, omdat het anders een rotsooitje wordt.
Onze wereldsamenleving is in haar vorm een bedenksel en/of voortkomend uit de denkgeest.
Maar zijn lichaam en geest niet één?
In een lichaam dat verkankerd is zijn enkele typische verschijnselen, die iedereen kent.
Ten eerste is van de kankercel zelf bekend, dat hij meer voeding opeist dan normale cellen. Daarom teren de gezonde cellen in. Daarom gaat de ziekte gepaard met uitmergeling /verarming.
Ten tweede is van de kankercel bekend, dat hij met der tijd steeds meer voeding opeist en onderwijl steeds ongespecialiseerder wordt.
Als wij het hebben over 'gespecialiseerd zijn' betekent dit, dat we ergens een beroep van hebben gemaakt. In onze wereldsamenleving verdienen (= voeding) de hoogst gespecialiseerden het meest.
Is dat niet vreemd en/of de omgekeerde werkelijkheid met hetgeen er op lichaamsniveau gebeurt?
Vervolgens weten wij dat die kanker in ons lichaam een soort machtspositie inneemt. Hij gaat ons lichaam dat langzaam uitmergelt steeds meer beheersen door uitzaaingen en/of metastasen.
Kijken we in een orgaan met uitzaaingen dan wordt de infra-structuur van zo'n orgaan verstoord en/of vernietigd. Zo ontstaan pijnen en kunnen o.a. leiden tot botbreuken.
Wat is "het voedsel voor petroleum beleid" meer dan een uitzaaing van supermachtige, superrijke en supergespecialiseerde landen?
Ook dit is weer de omgekeerde wereld van hetgeen er in ons lichaam gebeurt.
Zijn lichaam en geest één, maar onderwijl in hun beider gedrag elkaars speigelbeeld?
Is alles wat existeert en/of bestaat niet gekleurd door dualiteit en/of yin en yang?
Is alles wat leeft of beweegt geen onderdeel van actie > reactie > actie > reactie enzovoort?
Is "alles wat is" niet onderverdeeld in wat wij noemen positieve en negatieve krachten?
Na ongeveer 14 jaar zoeken in onze lichaamssamenleving bleek kanker te ontstaan op het moment dat de cel zijn eigen afval begint te recyclen.
Toen- op dát moment- was ik er vrij zeker van, dat die vondst de waarheid in zich droeg.
De volksgezegde "De wereld is verkankerd" kreeg toen opeens een reëele waarde.
Een volksgezegde is een gezegde van het ongespecialiseerde volk.
De superspecialist verwerpt deze "domme" redenering als zijnde onwetendheid, maar ook dat lijkt weer de omkering van de werkelijkheid.
Is het toevallig dat deze ontwikkeling ooit werd beschreven als "the circle of contempt" of "de omkeringscyclus"?
Is re-cycling niet het omkeren van de cyclus?
Neen, dat is geen toeval!
Het is daarom dat de gezonde "cellen" in onze samenleving kankeren en demonstreren, terwijl de verkankerde machtshebbers menen dat alles goed gaat zoals het gaat. Daarom noemen wij dit beeld demoncratie en moet de volkspropaganda van deze kankercellen op volle toeren blijven draaien om ons te blijven hypnotiseren, dat we een democratie hebben.
Deze ontwikkeling van de omkeringscyclus kreeg helaas de naam globalisatie, waardoor het beeld verkankering op de achtergrond werd gedrukt.
De geest van leven van hen die de macht hebben is verkankerd en gelijk kanker is die macht vele malen sterker dan van de gezonde 'cellen' in onze wereldsamenleving. Die laatsten kunnen demonstreren wat ze willen, maar er zal niets veranderen.
Over de gevolgen van deze verankerde geest van leven, dat de kenmerken van goed en kwaad in zich draagt, gaat "De luxe van een kankercel te zijn".
Het lichamelijk kwaad is een uiting van het vermeende geestelijk goed.
Het is onze materiële welvaart, die ons geestelijke armoede brengt of andersom.
Het leidt ons als mensengroep naar een mensenplaag, klimatologische verandering, oplossing van de ozonlaag en veel meer. Het voert ons gelijk kanker naar de Sidha en/of Poort des Doods. De Sida of Aids als ziekte is lichamelijke /materiële verarming van materiële rijkdom op haar hoogtepunt.
De geschiedenis herhaalt zich tot het einde der dagen.
Kijkend in de evolutie zelf blijkt de mens daarmee niet veel slimmer dan de dinosaurus. De mens is alleen heetbloediger in lichaam en geest.
Ook de dinosaurussen gingen als plaag ten onder na een periode van zure regen.
Het enige verschil tussen de dinosaurus en de mens is, dat zij niet ziek werden en wij wel!
Is dat niet dom?
Is dat niet mensdom?
Zijn we daarmee dommer dan de dinosaurus van weleer?

Recent kwam een boekje uit over het ontstaan van dit kwaad/aardige gezwel en heet cryptisch "De luxe… van een kankercel te zijn". (zie o.a. downloadbaar op http://www.confissius.com).
Natuurlijk werd iedere publicatie van dit boekje angsvallig uit de media gehouden, maar dat is "de leugen die ons in alle facetten" beheerst.
Om in dokterstermen te spreken is dit verkankeringsproces momenteel in het allerlaatste stadium, waarvan de tanende economie van de "kankercel" [hij is pas gezond als het beter gaat] slechts één voorbeeld is.
Zouden de Bijbel en de Maya-kalender uiteindelijk toch gelijk krijgen?
Ik vrees met grote vrezen.

PLACHIMADA, India - In the end it was the 'generosity' of Coca-Cola in distributing cadmium-laden waste sludge as 'free fertilizer' to the tribal aborigines who live near the beverage giant's bottling plant in this remote Kerala village that proved to be its undoing.

On Friday, the Kerala State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) ordered the plant shut down to the jubilation of tribal leaders and green activists who had focused more on the 'water mining' activities of the plant rather than its production of toxic cadmium sludge.

''One way or another, this plant should be shut down and the management made to pay compensation for destroying our paddy fields, fooling us with fake fertilizer and drying out our wells,'' Paru Amma, an aboriginal woman who lives in this once lush, water-abundant area, told IPS.

Chairman of the KSPCB, G. Rajmohan, said the closure was ordered because the plant ''does not have adequate waste treatment systems and toxic products from the plant were affecting drinking water in nearby villages'' and that the plant ''has also not provided drinking water in a satisfying manner to local residents''.

Apparently, the generosity of the Coca-Cola plant was limited to distributing sludge and waste water free and did not extend to providing drinking water to people seriously affected by its operations.

In a statement Saturday, Coca-Cola said it was ''reviewing the order passed by the chairman of the Pollution Control Board, Kerala state,'' and that ''going forward, we are in the process of evaluating future steps, including a judicial review''.

The KSPCB closure order is only the latest episode in a see-saw battle between Coca-Cola and the impoverished but plucky local residents ever since the Atlanta-based company began operating its 25 million-dollar bottling plant in this village, located in the state's fertile Palakkad district, in 2001.

Psychonomen onderzoeken processen - waarnemen, motoriek, leren, beslissen, denken, geemotioneerd raken, spreken, schrijven, enz. - die zich in tal van situaties, bij kind en volwassene, individueel en sociaal, in normale en gestoorde vorm voordoen.

De psychonomische aanpak kenmerkt zich door een voorkeur voor het doen van proeven onder goed gecontroleerde omstandigheden, door een streven naar objectiviteit, exactheid en kwantificering en door het opstellen van toetsbare theorieen. De psychonoom is niet alleen op zoek naar de logos (leer ) van het gedrag, maar ook vooral naar de nomos, de wetten waarmee het gedrag zich laat beschrijven en voorspellen.

Psychonomisch onderzoek wordt doorgaans in laboratoria gedaan, in de vorm van experimenten met gebruikmaking van geavanceerde apparatuur. Technici zijn nodig voor de ontwikkeling en bediening van electronische apparatuur, voor programmering van computerge stuurde experimenten, voor gegevensverzameling en -analyse met behulp van complexe statistische technieken. Bij het beschrijven van de resultaten van het experimentele onderzoek ligt de nadruk op het ontwikkelen van formele modellen en theorieen. Daartoe zijn wiskundigen, informatici en logici bij het onderzoek betrokken.

In toenemende mate maken psychonomen gebruik van onderzoeksmethoden die de activiteit van de hersenen zelf registreren.

Free to use and free to edit, Wikipedia is growing fast. Now its founder has announced a series of new projects, writes Sean Dodson

In less than five years, what started out as a small side project with a budget of a few thousand pounds has grown into one of the web's greatest success stories. Wikipedia, the open, editable encyclopedia, and its sister projects have gone from absolutely nothing to 22m entries in less than half a decade. In doing so, Wikipedia - the centrepiece of the Wikimedia empire - has become the most detailed encyclopedia in history. And its breathtaking pace has yet to show any sign of slowing.

As an online knowledge database, Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org) has one significant advantage over its expert, professional predecessors: anyone is free to edit it. Equally, anybody is free to delete entries or add new ones. The system works by using editable web pages known as wikis (hence the name), which let ordinary users make changes as they see fit. And, in handing this power to the people, Wikipedia has become more than just a hobby - for some it is almost a religion.

Two years ago I was a neocon. I supported Bush’s war on Iraq and I called everyone who didn’t a liberal Kool-aid drinker. I voted for Bush in 2000 and I listened to Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and just about any right-winger on the radio that I could get a four-word talking point from to use against liberals. I would say things such as "liberals won’t defend America," "shut up and sing," "freedom is on the march," and "you’re a great American." I supported the war at first because I bought into the lies and propaganda.

I no longer do. I’m a recovering neocon.

Cocosnoot

De ontdekking van de dag is vandaag een cocosnoot. Elke Belg zou vanaf heden verplicht moeten worden bij wet mistens eenmaal per jaar cocos te vreten. Twee cocosnoten per dag dekken voor de gemiddelde mens de gemiddelde levensnoodzakelijke stoffen. Doe daar nog enkele ander ingredienten bij en je bekomt een volwaardig dieet. Om dus nog meer modaal te worden: Vreet cocosnoten a volonte! Cocos brengt een mens al eens van z’n luie krent af. Ja, cocos dwingt een mens tot een smakelijk, doch niet te onderschatten ritueel. Benodigde tuigen zijn hamer en beitel. Men kloppe twee van de drie gaatjes bovenaan de cocos open. Men zorge voor een makkelijke doorstroming. Veil die gaatjes dus te goed uit. Men giet vervolgens de inhoud door een zeefje. Drinken, rest openbreken, wit opeten. En de houten restanten kan je gebruiken als decoratie of theelichthouders, of waar al uw fantasie naartoe zweeft.

Wanneer

Wanneer wij de sterren worden en op meer dan de aarde alleen neerkijken. Wanneer wij niet meer hoeven te reizen aan het firmament, maar dat firmament zelf (geworden) zijn. Wanneer we alles bezield hebben met leven, met ruggegraat en pikant. Wanneer elke klank een sprookje is. Wanneer we zien wat werkelijk leeft, dat alles werkelijk leeft, dat er niet iets is zoals dode materie. Wanneer we denken te denken, weten te weten. Wanneer we voelen! Wanneer elke geur of smaak een sprookje vertelt ...dan verstuift passie over gans ons universum.

Walden twee

B.F. Skinner schrijft in 1948 een vervolg op het befaamde boek van Thoreau. Skinner staat in mensen hun geheugen gegrift als een onverbeterlijke behaviourist. Dit boek ‘Walden Twee’ is schitterend. Alhoewel ik niet geloof dat een uitsluitend gedragsmatige aanpak van mensen de ultieme oplossing is om tot een pracht van een maatschappij te komen, vind ik heel wat van zijn ideeen boeiend. Neem bijvoorbeeld hoofdstuk acht eens ‘ter hand’:

We vonden een plaatsje bij het raam in een klein gezelschapszaaltje en zetten onze stoelen zo dat we uit konden kijken over het langzaam donker wordende landschap. Frazier scheen geen speciaal gesprek te hebben voorbereid en hij begon er een beetje moe uit te zien. Castle had waarschijnlijk een heleboel te zeggen, maar hij scheen van mening te zijn dat ik het gesprek moest openen.

‘We zijn dankbaar voor je vriendelijkheid,’ zei ik tegen Frazier, ‘niet alleen om ons uit te nodigen op Walden Twee, maar ook om ons zoveel van je tijd te geven. Ik ben bang dat we een beetje misbruik van je maken.’

‘Integendeel,’ zei Frazier. ‘Ik word er volledig voor betaald om met jullie te praten. Er worden twee arbeidspunten gegeven voor iedere dag dat iemand de zorg van de gasten van Walden Twee op zich neemt. Ik kan er maar een van gebruiken, maar niettemin is het aantrekkelijk voor me, omdat ik meer dan goed betaald word door jullie gezelschap.’

‘Arbeidspunten?’ zei ik.

‘Sorry, dat vergat ik. Arbeidspunten zijn een soort geld. Maar het zijn geen munten of biljetten – het zijn alleen maar aantekeningen in een kaartsysteem. Alle goederen en diensten zijn gratis, zoals jullie vanavond in de eetzaal hebben gezien. Ieder van ons betaald voor wat hij gebruikt met twaalfhonderd arbeidspunten per jaar – zeg maar vier arbeidspunten voor elke werkdag. We wijzigen de waarde van een punt al naar de behoeften van de commune. Met twee uur werken per punt – een achturige werkweek – zouden we met een mooie winst kunnen draaien. We zijn tevreden als we net iets meer dan onze kosten eruit halen. Het winstsysteem is slecht, ook als de arbeider de winst krijgt, omdat de spanning van overwerk zelfs door een hoge beloning niet verlicht wordt. Al wat we verlangen is onze kosten goed te maken met een kleine veiligheidsmarge; we passen de waarde van de arbeidspunten dienovereenkomstig aan. Op dit ogenblik is het ongeveer een uur per punt.’

‘Werken de leden van de commune maar vier uur per dag?’ zei ik. Er lag iets van morele verontwaardiging in mijn stem, alsof ik gevraagd had of zij allemaal overspelig waren.

‘Gemiddeld wel ja,’ antwoordde Frazier losjes. Ondanks onze duidelijke belangstelling ging hij meteen tot een ander punt over. ‘Een puntensysteem maakt het ook mogelijk een bepaald werk te waarderen in termen van bereidheid van de leden om het te doen. Tenslotte doet niemand niet meer of minder dan zijn aandeel wegens de tijd die hij eraan werkt; het gaat erom wat hij doet. Dus we geven eenvoudig een verschillende puntenwaarde aan verschillende soorten werk, en passen die van tijd tot tijd aan op basis van de behoefte. Bellamy heeft dit denkbeeld geopperd in Looking Backward.’

‘Een onaangenaam werkje zoals riolen schoonmaken heeft dan zeker een hoge waarde,’ zei ik.

‘Precies. Ongeveer anderhalf punt per uur denk ik. De riolenman werkt iets meer dan twee uur per dag. Prettiger werk heeft een lage waarde – iets van zeven of acht tiende punt. Dat betekent vijf uur per dag, of nog wel meer. Werken in de bloementuin heeft een zeer lage waarde, een tiende punt. Niemand verdient alleen daarmee de kost, maar veel mensen vinden het prettig een poosje op die manier door te brengen, en dat waarderen we. Op de lange duur, als de puntenwaarde is aangepast, zijn alle soorten werk even aantrekkelijk. Als dat niet zo was, zou er meer vraag ontstaan naar prettiger soort werkzaamheden, en dan zou de puntenwaarde daarvan veranderd worden. Een enkele keer bewerken we kunstmatig de voorkeur, als het een of andere werk zonder reden vermeden schijnt te worden.’

‘Ik neem aan dat jullie grammofoonplaten in de slaapzalen laten draaien die steeds maar herhalen “Ik vind het fijn in de riolen te werken. Riolen zijn leuk”,’ zei Castle.

‘Nee, Walden Twee is niet zo’n heerlijke nieuwe wereld,’ zei Frazier. ‘We maken geen propaganda. Dat is een grondbeginsel. Ik zeg niet dat het niet mogelijk zou zijn. We zouden het zwaarste werk het meest eervol en begerenswaardig kunnen laten lijken. Iets dergelijks is altijd gedaan door goed georganiseerde regeringen – bijvoorbeeld om het werven van soldaten te vergemakkelijken. Maar dat gebeurt hier niet. Je zult misschien zeggen dat we propaganda maken voor alle werk, maar ik zie niet in wat daartegen is. Als we het werken plezieriger kunnen maken door geschikte training, waarom niet? Maar ik dwaal af.’

‘Hoe zit het met de kennis en de vaardigheid die voor vele soorten werk nodig zijn?’ vroeg Castle. ‘Hoe is dat te verenigen met een vrije keuze? Je kunt toch zeker niet ieder die maar wil als arts laten werken.’

‘Nee, natuurlijk niet. Het principe moet gewijzigd worden in gevallen waar een lange opleiding voor nodig is. Maar toch wordt de uiteindelijke waarde van een baan bepaald door de voorkeuren van de commune als geheel. Als onze dokters duidelijk overwerkt zouden zijn volgens onze normen, zou het moeilijk zijn jonge mensen ertoe te krijgen dat beroep te kiezen. We moeten zorgen dat er genoeg dokters zijn om hun gemiddelde werkschema binnen de norm van Walden Twee te houden.’

‘En als niemand dokter zou willen worden?’ vroeg ik.

‘We hebben eerder moeilijkheden met het omgekeerde.’

‘Dat dacht ik al,’ zei Castle. ‘Teveel van jullie jonge leden zullen in een interessant vak willen gaan ondanks het zware werk. Wat doen jullie dan?’

‘We vertellen hun hoeveel plaatsen er beschikbaar zullen zijn en laten ze zelf beslissen. We zijn natuurlijk blij dat we meer dan genoeg artsen hebben en zouden altijd het een of andere werk voor ze kunnen vinden, maar op strikt medisch gebied kunnen we hen niet meer bieden dan onze afschuwelijk goede gezondheid oplevert.’

‘Jullie bieden dus geen volledige persoonlijke vrijheid, wel?’ vroeg Castle met slecht verborgen opwinding. ‘Jullie hebben geen werkelijk oplossing gevonden voor het conflict tussen een laissez faire- en een geleide samenleving.’

‘Ik geloof van wel. Maar jullie moeten meer weten van ons opvoedingssysteem voor ik jullie kan laten zien op welke manier. Het is namelijk zeer onwaarschijnlijk dat iemand op Walden Twee zo sterk zijn zinnen heeft gezet op een bepaalde richting dat hij ongelukkig is wanneer die niet voor hem openstaat. Dat geldt evenzeer voor de keuze van een meisje els van een beroep. Persoonlijke jaloezie komt bij ons bijna niet voor, om deze eenvoudige reden: we bieden veel ervaringen en veel aantrekkelijke alternatieven. Het tedere gevoel van de “enige ware” geliefde is niet zozeer een kwestie van standvastigheid in de liefde als wel een gebrek aan mogelijkheden. Er is alle kans dat onze overtollige aanstaande artsen andere mogelijkheden zullen vinden die al gauw even aantrekkelijk zullen blijken.’

‘Waarom moet dan iedereen per se lichamelijk werk doen?’ zei Castle onschuldig.

‘Eenvoudig omdat hersenarbeid en spierarbeid nooit exclusief zijn. Niemand van ons is alleen maar hoofd of alleen maar handen, en we moeten ons leven daar naar inrichten. Het is funest, het minderheidselement te negeren – funest, de arbeider te behandelen alsof hij geen hersens zou hebben, en misschien op nog kortere termijn even funest, het omgekeerde te doen. Een of twee uur lichamelijke arbeid per dag is een gezondheidsmaatregel. De mens heeft altijd van zijn spieren geleefd – dat zie je aan zijn lichaamsbouw. We moeten onze grote spieren niet laten attrofieren omdat we zulke goede manieren bedacht hebben om de kleine spieren te gebruiken. We zijn nog niet geevolueerd tot een louter Denkende Mens. Vraag maar eens aan een dokter wat hij denkt van de beroepsziektes van mensen die niet werken. Ten gevolge van bepaalde culturele voordelen die Veblen waarschijnlijk wel beschreven heeft, kan de dokter niets anders voorschrijven dan golf, of een hometrainer, of houthakken, mits de patient eigenlijk geen gehakt hout nodig heeft. Maar wat de dokter eigenlijk zou willen zeggen is “Ga werken!”

Maar er is nog een betere reden waarom onze hoofdarbeiders hun spieren niet mogen verwaarlozen,’ vervolgde Frazier. ‘In onze tijd zijn het altijd de knappe koppen, de mensen die hun kleine spieren gebruiken, die in de leidinggevende functies terechtkomen. Op Walden Twee zijn zij degenen die plannen maken, materiaal aanschaffen, codes ontwerpen, trends evalueren, experimenten leiden. Bij dat soort werk moet de Bedrijfsleider toezien op de uitvoerende krachten, hij moet hun behoeften kennen, hun ervaringen delen. Daarom ook moeten ons planbureau, onze bedrijfsleiders en onderzoekers een deel van hun arbeidspunten met handenarbeid verdienen. Het is onze constituele garantie dat de problemen van de handarbeiders niet vergeten zullen worden.’

We zwegen. Onze spiegelbeelden in de ruiten liepen verwarrend dooreen met de laatste sporen van daglicht aan de zuidelijke hemel. Eindelijk schudde Castle zichzelf wakker.

‘Maar vier uur per dag! Dat kan ik niet ernstig opvatten. Denk eens aan de strijd voor een veertigurige werkweek! Wat zouden onze industrielen niet geven voor dat geheim. Of onze politice! Mr Frazier, we moeten wel bewondering hebben voor het leven dat we hier te zien krijgen, maar ik heb op de een of andere manier het gevoel dat je ons een lieftallige dame vertoont die in de lucht zweeft. Je hebt zelfs een hoepel over haar heen geworpen om je toverkunsten beter te laten uitkomen. En nu je ons zogenaamd verklaart hoe de truc werkt, krijgen we te horen dat de dame aan een dun draadje hangt. De uitleg is even moeilijk te accepteren als gezichtsbedrog. Waar is je bewijs?’

‘Het bewijs achter het voldongen feit? Doe niet zo belachelijk! Maar misschien kan ik je tevreden stellen door je te vertellen hoe wij wisten dat het mogelijk was, voordat we het probeerden.’

‘Dat zou al heel wat zijn,’ zie Castle droog.

‘Goed dan,’ zei Frazier. ‘Laten we een standaard zevendaagse week van acht uur per dag nemen. (De veertigurige week is nog niet in alle beroepen een feit. Menige boer zou het een vacantie noemen.) Dat betekent bijna 3000 uur per jaar. Wij wilden dat terugbrengen tot 1500. In feite hebben we het nog verder verlaagd, maar hoe wisten we dat we het konden halveren? Ben je tevreden als ik daar een antwoord op geef?’

‘Het zal me verbazen,’ zei Castle.

‘Goed,’ zei Frazier vlug, alsof hij zowaar door Castle’s woorden aangespoord was. ‘Allereerst hebben we het overduidelijke feit dat vier meer is dan de helft van acht. We werken beter en sneller gedurende de eerste vier uren van de dag. Het uiteindelijke effect van een vierurige dag is enorm groot, mits iemand iemand de rest van de tijd geen al te inspannend werk doet. Laten we een lage schatting doen, om ruimte te laten voor werk dat niet sneller gedaan kan worden, en zeggen dat vier uur gelijk staat aan vijf uur van de gebruikelijke acht. Akkoord?’

‘Ik zou een querulant zijn als ik het er niet mee eens was,’ zei Castle, ‘maar je bent nog lang niet bij acht.’

‘Ten tweede,’ zei Frazier, met een tevreden glimlachje dat ons beloofde dat hij de acht ook wel zou halen, ‘hebben we de extra motivatie die ontstaat als iemand voor zichzelf werkt en niet voor een baas die de winst opstrijkt. Dat is een waar “premieloon”, en het effect is wonderbaarlijk. Er wordt minder tijd verknoeid, beter gewerkt; lijntrekken komt niet meer voor. Zullen we zeggen dat vier uur voor jezelf evenveel waard zijn als zes van de acht uur voor een ander?’

‘Ik hoop dat je erop zult wijzen,’ zei ik, ‘dat de vier uur niet zwaarder zijn dat de zes uur. De kantjes eraf lopen maakt een baantje echt niet gemakkelijker. Verveling is uitputtender dan zwaar werk. Maar hoe zit het met de andere twee uur?’

‘Laat ik jullie eraan herinneren dat niet alle Amerikanen die in staat zijn tot werken, dat op het ogenblik doen,’ zei Frazier. ‘We vergelijken in feite acht uur per dag door sommigen met vier uur van praktisch allen. Op Walden Twee hebben we geen nietsdoende klasse, geen voortijdig gepensioneerden, of arbeidsongeschikten, geen dronkenschap, geen criminaliteit, veel minder zieken. We hebben geen werkeloosheid ten gevolge van wanbeleid. Niemand wordt ervoor betaald om niets te doen omwille van het handhaven van de arbeidsverhoudingen. Onze kinderen werken al op jeugdige leeftijd – met mate, maar ze vinden het prettig. Hoeveel uur geef je daarvoor Mr Castle? Mag ik nog een uur aan mijn zes toevoegen?’

‘Ik ben bang dat ik zelfs nog meer zou moeten toestaan,’ zei Castle lachend, met een verwonderlijke goedmoedigheid.

‘Maar laten we een lage schatting aanhouden,’ zei Frazier, duidelijk verheugd, ‘en zeggen dat wanneer iedere potentiele werker vier uur voor zichzelf werkt, we het equivalent hebben van misschien tweederde van alle beschikbare werkers die zeven van de acht uur werken voor iemand anders. En hoe is het nu gesteld met deze laatsten op ’t ogenblik dat zij aan het werk zijn? Werken zij zo voordelig mogelijk? Zijn zij zogvuldig uitgekozen voor het werk dat ze doen? Maken zij het beste gebruik van werkbesparende methodes? Hoeveel van de boerderijen zijn net zo gemechaniseerd als de onze? Worden werkbesparende uitvindingen en methodes door de arbeiders toegejuigd en verbeterd? Hoeveel goede krachten zijn vrij op te schuiven naar productievere niveau’s? Hoeveel scholing krijgen zij om hen zo bekwaam mogelijk te maken?

‘Ik kan niet veel punten geven voor een beter gebruik van de mankracht wanneer je je leden een vrije beroepskeuze toestaat,’ zei Castle.

‘Dat is een buitensporigheid, daar heb je gelijk in,’ zei Frazier. ‘Bij de volgende generatie zullen we het beter doen; daar zal ons opvoedingssysteem voor zorgen. Akkoord. Geen extra tijd voor verkeerd geplaatst talent.’ Hij zweeg even, alsof hij zat te berekenen of hij sich deze concessie kon veroorloven.

‘Je hebt nog steeds een uur te verantwoorden,’ bracht ik hem in herinnering.

‘Weet ik, weet ik,’ zei hij. ‘Nu, hoeveel van het distributieapparaat hebben wij afgeschaft? Hoeveel mensen zijn daardoor vrijgekomen? Hoeveel baantjes hebben wij eenvoudigweg geschrapt? Loop eens door een willekeurige straat in een stad. Hoeveel mensen zul je daar aantreffen die werkelijk nuttig werk doen? Er is een bank. En verderop een pandjeshuis. En een reclamebureau. En daar ginds een verzekeringskantoor. En daar nog een.’ Het was als verkoopspraatje niet erg indrukwekkend, maar Frazier scheen bereid enige persoonlijke waardigheid te verliezen omwille van de argumentatie. ‘Onze kinderen kunnen het begrip verzekering maar moeilijk begrijpen. Verzekering tegen wat? En daar is een rouwkamer – een crematorium handelt met onze as zoals hun goeddunkt.’ – Met een hoofdschudden liet hij dit onderwerp varen. ‘En daar en daar de alomtegenwoordige cafes en kroegen, al even zinloos. Drinken is niet verboden op Walden Twee, maar wij geven het allemaal op zodra we de behoeften bevredigen die in de buitenwereld verantwoordelijk zijn voor de drinkgewoonte.’

‘Als ik dit uitstapje even mag onderbreken,’ zei ik, ‘welke behoeften zijn dat?’

‘Wel, waarom drink jij?’ zei Frazier.

‘Ik drink niet – niet veel. Maar ik heb graag een borrel voor het eten. Feitelijk is mijn gezelschap niet veel waard voor die tijd.’

‘Integendeel, je gezelschap is bijzonder plezierig,’ zei Frazier.

‘Hier is het wat anders,’ zei ik, in zijn val lopend. Frazier en Castle lachtten luidruchtig.

‘Natuurlijk is het hier wat anders!’ riep Frazier. ‘Je hebt een borrel nodig als tegenwicht tegen de vermoeidheid en verveling van een slecht geleidde maatschappij. Hier hebben we geen tegengiften nodig. Geen opiaten. Maar waarom drink je anders? Of waarom drinkt wie dan ook? Want ik begrijp wel dat jij geen typisch voorbeeld bent.’

‘Nou, om je moeilijkheden te veregeten,’ stamelde ik. ‘Ik snap natuurlijk wel wat je daarop zult zeggen. Maar om te ontsnappen bijvoorbeeld, of voor de verandering – om je remmingen te verminderen. Jullie hebben toch ook remmingen, is ’t niet? Misschien kan een van de anderen het verlossende woord spreken?’ Ik wendde me tactloos tot Barbara, die de andere kant op keek.

Frazier zat even zachtjes te lachen, en sloeg toen opnieuw toe.

‘Laat ik een paar zaken noemen die we niet geelimineerd hebben, maar wel gestroomlijnd wat betreft mankracht,’ zei hij. ‘De grote warenhuizen, de vleesmarkten, de kruidenierswinkels, de drugstores om de hoek, de autoshowrooms, de meubelzaken, de schoenwinkels, de banketbakkerijen, allemaal met onnodig personeel dat onnodige dingen doet. De helft van de restaurants kan voorgoed gesloten worden. En daar heb je het schoonheidssalon en daar een filmpaleis. En een dancing, en een kegelbaan. En voortdurend suizen d’er bussen en trams voorbij, die mensen van de ene nutteloze plaats naar de andere brengen.’

Hij droeg het niet te best voor, maar het was een vernietigend betoog.

‘Je krijgt je laatste uur en welgefeliciteerd,’ zei Castle, toen hij zag dat Frazier nog niet uitgepraat was. ‘Ik had je op je woord moeten geloven. Het is tenslotte zoals je zegt, een voldongen feit.’

‘Willen jullie graag dat ik er tien uur van maak?’ zei Frazier; hij glimlachte jongensachtig en we moesten allemaal lachen. ‘Onze meest dramatische besparing op mankracht heb ik nog niet genoemd.’

‘Dan heb je nog een kans om iets origineels te zeggen,’ zei ik. ‘Ik moet bekennen dat ik niet zo onder de indruk ben als Castle. Het grootste deel van wat je gezegd hebt, is algemeen bekende kritiek op ons economisch systeem. Alle professoren kunnen je dat vertellen.’

‘Natuurlijk. Zelfs professoren weten al deze dingen. De economie van een commune is een kinderspel.’

‘Hoe zit het met die twee extra uren,’ zei ik, besloten op deze insinuatie in te gaan.

Frazier zweeg nog even, ons een voor een aankijkend.

‘Cherchez la femme!’ zei hij tenslotte. Hij genoot van ons onbegrip. ‘De vrouwen! De vrouwen! (1948, nvdr) Wat denken jullie dat zij al deze tijd gedaan hebben? Dat is onze grootste prestatie! We hebben de huishoudkunst geindustrialiseerd!’ Hij sprak het weer uit als ‘huizekens’, en ditmaal snapte ik het. ‘Sommige van onze vrouwen doen nog wel werk dat ook tot hun taak als huisvrouw behoord zou hebben, maar ze werken efficienter en met plezier. En minstens de helft van hen is beschikbaar voor ander werk.’

Frazier leunde achterover met kennelijke voldoening. Castle vermande zich.

‘Er is iets dat me dwars zit,’ zei hij kortaf. ‘Je hebt een vierurige wekdag overtuigend laten lijken door te wijzen op een groot deel van de bevolking dat geen betaald werk doet. Maar velen van die mensen leven niet zo goed als jullie hier. Voor onze huidige gemiddelde productie is misschien maar vier uur werk per man per dag nodig – maar dat is niet genoeg. Het moet wat meer zijn dan het gemiddelde. Je moest de onproductieve armoezaaiers maar liever buiten beschouwing laten – die produceren niet, maar consumeren ook niet – de stakkers.’

‘Dat is waar, we hebben hier een hoge levensstandaard,’ zei Frazier. ‘Maar onze persoonlijke rijkdom is werkelijk heel gering. De goederen die wij consumeren komen op geen groot bedrag in dollars en centen. We volgen het principe van Thoreau en vermijden onnodige bezitsvorming. Thoreau heeft gezegd dat de gemiddelde arbeider in Concord tien tot vijftien jaar van zijn leven werkte alleen om een dak boven zijn hoofd te hebben. Bij ons is dat tien weken, hoog geschat. Ons voedsel is overvloedig en gezond, maar niet duur. Er gaat weinig of niets verloren door bederf of verspilling bij vervoer of opslag, en niets door verkeerd berekende vraag. Hetzelfde geldt voor andere producten. Wij staan niet onder druk van reclame waardoor een onnodige consumptie wordt gestimuleerd.

We hebben een aantal auto’s en vrachtwagens, maar veel minder dan de honderd personenauto’s en de vele bedrijfswagens die we zouden bezitten wanneer we niet in een commune leefden. Onze radio-installatie is veel minder duur dan de drie- of vierhonderd toestellen die we anders zouden gebruiken – zelfs als sommigen van ons armoezaaiers zonder radio zouden zijn. Nee, Mr Castle, wij strijden juist op dit punt voor economische vrijheid – door een zeer hoge levensstandaard met een laag consumptiepeil. Onze consumptie is lager dan die van de gemiddelde Amerikaan.’

Hoewel de tijden veranderd zijn vrouwen hebben meer rechten gekregen en verworven sinds 1948, mannen houden zich, althans in het Westen, al wat meer bezig met het huishouden, zijn heel wat punten van Skinner’s betoog bijzonder boeiend. Kleine leefgemeenschappen gestoeld op sommige van zijn principes zouden in de toekomst wel eens leefbaar kunnen blijken... De vooruitgang van de technologie biedt op dat vlak heel wat hoopvols.

Vele communes zijn opgericht. Slechts enkelen blijken effectief te werken. Maar als mensen kunnen we leren van de fouten en voorbeelden van zovelen voor ons. En gelukkig bestaan er lovenswaardige, leefbare en mogelijk te volgen voorbeelden. Ik denk dat we vooral veel aandacht moeten besteden aan het reorganiseren van onze opvoeding. Hieromtrent heeft Skinner ook te bestuderen ideeen misschien niet allemaal zaligmakend, ten minste toch het overwegen en in vraag stellen waard...

Acht uren achter de schoolbanken zitten is teveel. Daar is een mens niet voor gemaakt! We hebben meer afwisseling nodig. Ook zou onze orientatie kunnen verschuiven. Misschien hebben we naast meer lichaamsbeweging ook meer aandacht nodig voor het ontwikkelen van bijvoorbeeld emotionele intelligentie, meditatie (reeds van jonge leeftijd) enzovoort enzoverder. Zoals steeds, kunnen we ’t beste mikken op het ontplooien van levenskwaliteit!

Waterstof

Waterstof kan je ‘t beste zien als de bron van energie in de toekomst. Waterstof kan je uit vele andere stoffen maken op perfect milieuvriendelijke wijze. De eerste prototypes wagens die op waterstof rijden bestaan al. Het is enkel een kwestie van tijd voordat alle vervoer er gebruik van zal maken. De industrie is hierover enthousiast. Waterstof is kwalitatiever en efficienter dan eender welke energiebron tot op heden ontdekt. Bovendien, kan je ze relatief eenvoudig opslaan in allerlij types batterijen... Krachtige batterijen die je overal kan meenemen, en die zeer lang meegaan alvorens je ze hoeft te herladen!

Nanotechnologie

Deze technologie werkt op molleculair vlak. D.w.z. op een zeer minuscuul deel van de materie. Toch, waarborgt deze technologie een toekomst die hoopgevend is voor de ganse mensheid. Stel dat het mogelijk wordt een mollecule als het ware te programmeren dat zij zich invreet als een goedaardige kanker in een hoop chemisch of nucleair afval. Zij herstructureert dat mens- en milieuonvriendelijke afval tot een hoopje onschadelijk afval. Over een aantal jaren, zal dit geen droombeeld meer zijn, maar harde werkelijkheid!

Linux

Linux is een operating systeem als MSDOS. Het ontstond uit de ontevredenheid van nogal wat computerspecialisten met het Microsoft operating systeem. Zij begonnen reeds in de jaren zeventig, in hun vrije tijd, te werken aan een alternatief Linux geheten. Dit alternatief is simpelweg meer gebruiksvriendelijk als MSDOS. Bovendien, bestaan er geen rechten op Linux. Je mag het vrij gebruiken, copieren en verdelen zoveel je wil!

Met de opkomst van internet, hebben alsmaar meer mensen zich ingezet om voor Linux een aantal programma’s te ontwikkelen die je bij Microsoft of Apple ook terug kan vinden. Deze programma’s zijn heden ten dage volwaardige tegenhangers van (zoniet duidelijk beter ontwikkeld als) wat de commerciele producenten aanbieden. Maar het grote verschil: Je mag er dus gratis gebruik van maken! In Nederland, draaien er al heel wat scholen en non-profitorganisaties op Linux.

Linux is wat men noemt een ‘open source’. Iedereen mag ervan gebruiken wat zij of hij wil. Elke vooruitgang komt effectief op het world wide web terecht. Zo kunnen programmeurs waar ook ter wereld vrijwillig verder een steentje bijdragen aan de ontwikkeling van zulk een schitterend concept. Ontwikkelingslanden kunnen hier enorm profijt aan doen. Ze hoeven immers geen schandalige bedragen te betalen op de rechten!

De echte ‘missing link’, pag 27-28:

Mijn stelling is dat de mutatie veroorzakende, psychoactieve chemische stoffen in het dieet van de eerste mensen een directe invloed hebben gehad op de snelle reorganisatie van de informatieverwerkende vermogens van de hersenen. Bepaalde plantaardige alkaloiden, met name hallucinogene bestanddelen, zoals psilocybine, dimethyltryptamine (DMT) en harmaline, zouden de chemische factoren in het proto-menselijke voedingspatroon kunnen zijn die het ontstaan van het menselijke zelfbewustzijn hebben gekatalyseerd. De werking van hallucinogenen die in veel algemeen voorkomende planten zitten, stimuleerde onze informatieverwerkende activiteit, ofwel onze gevoelligheid voor de omgeving, en droeg zo bij aan de plotselinge vergroting van de menselijke hersenen. In een latere fase van ditzelfde proces fungeerden hallucinogenen als katalysatoren in de ontwikkeling van de verbeelding. Ze stimuleerden het creeren van innerlijke strategieen en gevoelens van hoop, die wellicht het ontstaan van taal en religie hebben bewerkstelligd.

In een onderzoek dat eind jaren zestig werd gedaan gaf Roland Fischer kleine hoeveelheden psilocybine aan postdoctoraalstudenten. Vervolgens mat hij hun vermogen om het moment waar te nemen waarop lijnen die aanvankelijk parallel liepen, uiteen gingen lopen. Hij merkte dat deze specifieke taak een stuk beter werd uitgevoerd met een kleine dosis psilocybine.

Toen ik deze bevindingen met Fischer besprak, legde hij eerst zijn conclusies uit, glimlachte toen en vatte aldus samen: ‘Wat je hier overtuigend bewezen ziet, is dat je onder bepaalde omstandigheden beter op de hoogte bent van de echte wereld met een drug dan zonder.’ Zijn geestige opmerking is mij altijd bijgebleven, eerst als academische anecdote, maar later zag ik het als een poging van zijn kant om me iets diepzinnigs duidelijk te maken. Als we zouden toegeven dat het gebruik van bepaalde chemicalien een aanpassingsvoordeel oplevert en daardoor diep komt ingeprent te staan in het gedrag en zelfs het genoom van bepaalde individuen, wat zouden daarvan de gevolgen zijn voor de evolutietheorie?

Suiker als verlaving, pag 189-190:

Is het vergezocht om suiker te bespreken in een geschiedenis van menselijk drugsmisbruik? Nee, dat is het niet. Suikermisbruik is een van de minst besproken en meest wijdverbreide verslavingen ter wereld. Daarnaast is het een van de moeilijkste gewoonten om mee op te houden. Suikerverslaafden kunnen het met mate verbruiken of er overdadig in zwelgen. Hoe ver een ernstige suikerverslaving kan gaan wordt aangetoond door boulemiapatienten, die zich kunnen volproppen met eten dat van suiker verzadigd is en vervolgens hun vinger in de keel steken of een laxeermiddel gebruiken, zodat ze nog meer suiker kunnen eten. Stel je voor dat heroineverslaafden zoiets zouden doen – heroinegebruik zou dan nog veel afschuwelijker en verradelijker aandoen! Net als bij alle andere stimulerende middelen (o.a. koffie, zwarte thee, enz.) wordt ook het eten van suiker gevolgd door een korte euforische ‘rush’, die op zijn beurt weer wordt gevolgd door depressiviteit en schuldgevoelens. Suikerverslaving als syndroom staat zelden op zichzelf; gemengde verslavingen (bijvoorbeeld een gecombineerde suiker-caffeineverslaving) komen vaker voor.

Suiker en slavernij, pag 191:

De vertekening en ontmenselijking van menselijke instituties en mensenlevens die vandaag de dag door crack wordt veroorzaakt, is niets vergeleken met wat het Europese verlangen naar suiker in de zeventiende en achtiende eeuw aanrichtte. Men zou hiertegen kunnen inbrengen dat zich ook in de eerste fasen van de cocaineproductie een situatie voordoet die in de richting van slavenarbeid komt. Het verschil is echter dat dat geen vorm van slavernij is die wordt goedgekeurd door leugenachtige pausen en openlijk wordt bedreven door corrupte, hoewel wettige regeringen. En er moet nog een verschil worden opgemerkt: hoe hard de moderne drugshandel ook is, het lijkt niets op de grootschalige ontvoering en transportatie van en massamoord op hele volksstammen, die plaatsvonden om het productieproces van suiker te bevorderen.

Cycli van uitbuiting, pag 199-200:

De opiumhandel was niets minder dan een terreur van de Britten in hun strijd tegen de bevolking van China, totdat ze de restricties die de Chinese regering tegen de import van opium had opgelegd, volkomen uit de weg had geruimd. In deze gebeurtenissen zit een patroon dat zich in onze eigen eeuw heeft herhaald. De dealers van de drug thee richtten zich op opium toen hun theemarkt onder een depressie leed; evenzo richtten westerse inlichtingendiensten, zoals de CIA en de Franse geheime dienst, in de jaren tachtig hun aandacht op de import van cocaine, nadat ze een bijna-monopolie op heroine waren kwijtgeraakt aan de mullahs van de Iraanse revolutie, die in heroine handelden. De geschiedenis van de met commerciele drugs verbonden synergistische processen – de manier waarop het gebruiken van een drug cynisch genoeg wordt aangemoedigd, om zo de introductie van andere drugs te ondersteunen – die zich in de afgelopen vijfhonderd jaren heeft afgespeeld, biedt geen fraai schouwspel. Misschien dat er daarom maar zo weinig naar wordt gekeken.

De exploitatiecycli begonnen met suiker. Zoals al besproken eiste suiker, waarvan het bestaan afhankelijk was van een wrede suikerhandel, in de loop van de zestiende eeuw steeds meer de aandacht van de consument op. De introductie van thee, koffie en chocolade in de zeventiende eeuw dreef de suikerrage naar nieuwe hoogten. Doordat suiker werd gebruikt in caffeinehoudende dranken en gedestilleerde alcohol, speelde het binnen de dominatorcultuur een indirecte, maar grote rol in het bevorderen van de onderklassen, en van vrouwen uit alle klassen. ‘Slaaf zijn aan een drug’ is een uitgekauwde metafoor, maar in het geval van suiker is die metafoor op verschrikkelijke wijze bewaarheid geworden.

Toen de theemarkt instortte, begon het distributiesysteem dat was opgezet en gefinancierd door de Britse Oost-Indische compagnie zich te richten op het produceren en verkopen van opium en op het uitbuiten van de Chinese bevolking, die zich buiten het eigenlijke koloniale systeem bevond. De ontdekkingen van morfine (1803) en later heroine (1873) waren onze opstap naar de twintigste eeuw. Verontruste maatschappelijke hervormers die poogden om drugsgebruik te legaliseren, slaagden er slechts in het onder de grond te drijven. En daar bevinden zich drugs nog steeds, al worden ze nu niet beheerst door bedrijven van industriebaronnen die hun opdrachten open en bloot uitvoeren, maar door internationale misdaadkartels die zich veelal voordoen als inlichtingendiensten. Het is, zoals William Burroughs al zei, ‘geen prettige aanblik’.

Drugs en plantenproducten zijn sinds het tijdperk van de ontdekkingsreizen steeds belangrijker factoren geworden in de netwerken van de internationale diplomatie. De verre tropen en de afgezonderd levende volkeren der aarde leiden niet langer een kwijnend bestaan. De blanke man houdt ze met zijn roofzuchtige blik scherp in de gaten. De tropen zijn productiegebieden geworden, die worden bevolkt door op contract aanstelbare arbeidskrachten, en waarvan wordt verwacht dat ze ruwe grondstoffen en een gretige markt voor de eindproducten opleveren. Net als de maenaden die zichzelf verloren in de extase van de Dionysische razernij, probeerden ook de met suiker bedwelmde dominatoreconomieen van Europa hun eigen kinderen te verslinden.

Electronische drugs, pag 237-238:

In zijn sciencefictionroman The Man in the High Castle schrijft Philip K. Dick over een verzonnen, alternatieve wereld waarin de Tweede Wereldoorlog is gewonnen door de Japanners en het Derde Rijk. In Dicks fictieve wereld hebben de autoriteiten van de Japanse bezetter marihuana geintroduceerd als een van de eerste stappen om de bevolking van Californie tot bedaren te brengen. Hier, in wat de volksmond zo luchthartig de ‘realiteit’ noemt, is de situatie nauwelijks minder vreemd. Ook in ‘deze wereld’ introduceerden de overwinnaars een allesdoordringende, buitengewoon krachtige, maatschappij-vormende drug. Die drug was de eerste van een groeiende groep high-tech-drugs die de gebruiker overbrengen naar een alternatieve realiteit door direct op het zintuigelijke centrum van de gebruiker te werken, zonder dat er chemische stoffen in het zenuwstelsel worden gebracht. Deze drug was televisie. Er is nooit een epidemie, een manie voor verslavende middelen of een godsdienstwaanzin geweest die in zo’n korte tijd zo’n snelle opmars heeft gekend, en waartoe zoveel mensen zich hebben bekeerd.

De verslavende macht van de televisie en de transformatie van waarden die in het leven van een zware gebruiker tot stand wordt gebracht, vallen nog het best te vergelijken met de effecten van heroine. Heroine vervlakt het beeld; met heroine zijn dingen koud noch warm; de junkie kijkt naar de wereld in de zekerheid dat wat het ook is, het allemaal niet uitmaakt. De illusie van kennis en controle die heroine veroorzaakt, is analoog aan de onbewuste aanname van de televisiekijker dat wat hij ziet elders op de wereld ook echt bestaat. Maar wat de kijker in feite ziet, zijn voor de schone schijn verfraaide oppervlakten van verzonnen producten. Zonder dat er chemische stoffen het lichaam van de gebruiker binnendringen, is de televisie in alle opzichten net zo verslavend en net zo schadelijk voor het lichaam als elk andere drug.

Het verborgen dwangmiddel, pag 238-240:

Het verwarrendste van dit alles is dit: de inhoud van tele-visie is geen visie, maar een kunstmatige stroom van gegevens, die kan worden gezuiverd om culturele waarden te ‘beschermen’ of voor te schrijven. Zo worden we dus geconfronteerd met een verslavende, allesdoordringende drug, die een ervaring biedt waarvan de boodschap alles kan zijn wat de dealers van die drug willen. Zou er iets bestaan dat een vruchtbaarder grond kan bieden om fascisme en totalitarisme op te kweken? In de Verenigde Staten zijn er veel meer televisies dan huishoudens; de televisie staat gemiddeld zes uur per dag aan, en de gemiddelde Amerikaan kijktruim vijf uur per dag – dat is bijna een derde van de tijd dat de gemiddelde Amerikaan wakker is. Hoewel we ons allemaal bewust zijn van deze feiten, schijnen we toch niet in staat te zijn om op de implicaties te reageren. Serieus onderzoek naar de gevolgen van televisie op de gezondheid en de cultuur is nog maar pas begonnen. Er komt echter in de geschiedenis niet een drug voor die de hele cultuur van de gebruiker van die drug zo snel en zo volledig heeft kunnen isoleren van het contact met de realiteit. En er bestaat niet een drug in de geschiedenis die er zo volledig in is geslaagd om de waarden van de cultuur die door die drug is besmet, naar zijn eigen evenbeeld te reconstrueren.

Televisie is van nature de dominatordrug bij uitstek. Controle over de inhoud, eenvormigheid van de inhoud en herhaalbaarheid van de inhoud maken het onvermijdelijk tot een instrument om mensen te kunnen dwingen, hersenspoelen en manipuleren. De televisie brengt de kijker in de trance die een noodzakelijke voorwaarde is voor een hersenspoeling. Net als het basiskarakter van alle andere drugs en technologieen kan ook het basiskarakter van de televisie niet worden veranderd; televisie is net zomin te hervormen als de technologie waarmee men automatische geweren produceert.

Voor de dominatorelite kwam de televisie precies op het juiste moment. De bijna honderdvijftig jaar van synthetische-drugepidemieen, die waren begonnen in 1806, hadden geleid tot een walging bij de aanblik van de verloedering van de mens en het spirituele kannibalisme die het institutionele verkopen van drugs had gecreeerd. Toen de slavernij niet langer nodig was, werd die verfoeilijk in de ogen van dezelfde instituties die de slavernij in het leven hadden geroepen; op dezelfde wijze veroorzaakte het drugsmisbruik uiteindelijk een verzet tegen deze specifieke vorm van roofzuchtig kapitalisme. Harddrugs werden illegaal gemaakt. Uiteraard begonnen hierdoor de clandestiene markten te bloeien, maar drugs als formele instrumenten van nationaal beleid waren in diskrediet gebracht. Er zouden nog steeds opiumoorlogen zijn, regeringen zouden nod steeds andere regeringen en bevolkingen dwingen om drugs te produceren of te kopen – maar in het vervolg zouden deze oorlogen achterbaks en stiekem zijn, ze zouden ‘geheim’ zijn.

Terwijl de inlichtingendiensten die in de nasleep van de Tweede Wereldoorlog ontstonden, zich opmaakten om hun ‘topgeheime’ posities in te nemen als de superbreinen achter de internationale drugskartels, begon het volk de televisie te waarderen. De televisie vervlakte, monteerde, paste zich aan en vereenvoudigde, kortom: deed zijn werk en creeerde in het na-oorlogse Amerika een Ken- en Barbie-cultuur. De kinderen van Ken en Barbie ontsnapten halverwege de jaren zestig kortstondig aan de televisieverslaving, dankzij het gebruik van hallucinogenen. ‘Oeps’, zeiden de dominators en ze maakten de psychedelische drugs vlug illegaal en zetten al het onderzoek stop. De in dwaling verkerende hippies kregen een dubbele dosis tv-therapie plus cocaine voorgeschoteld, en zie, ze waren fluks genezen en veranderd in op consumptie gerichte yuppen. Slechts een klein aantal weerspannigen wist aan deze waardennivellering te ontsnappen. Bijna iedereen leerde om van Grote Broer te houden. En over die paar die dat niet doen, klokt de Vader Haan van de dominatorcultuur nog altijd misnoegd voor zich uit als hij neurotisch voor zich rondscharrelt in het stof van zijn verwarring over ‘wat er gebeurd is in de sixties’.

LSD en de psychedelische jaren zestig, pag 258-262:

Om de rol van psychedelica in de jaren zestig te begrijpen, moeten we ons weer de lessen van de prehistorie in herinnering brengen, en het belang voor de eerste mensen van het oplossen van grenzen ingroepsrituelen op basis van het innemen van hallucinogene planten. Het effect van deze chemische stoffen is grotendeels van psychologische aard, en is maar ten dele toe te schrijven aan culturele conditionering; in feite doen de chemische substanties juist alle vormen van culturele conditionering teniet. Ze forceren het ondermijnende proces van hervorming van gemeenschapswaarden. Dergelijke stoffen moeten we zien als deconditionerende middelen; doordat ze de betrekkelijkheid van conventionele waarden aan het licht brengen, worden het sterke krachten in de politieke strijd om de evolutie van maatschappelijke beelden te beheersen.

De plotselinge introductie van een krachtig deconditionerend middel als LSD leidde ertoe dat men zich massaal begon af te zetten tegen de gemeenschapswaarden, met name tegen waarden die gebaseerd waren op een dominatorhierarchie waarin men gewend was om bewustzijn en besef te onderdrukken.

Van alle drugs is LSD de enige die in zo’n kleine hoeveelheid zo effectief is. LSD is al in een dosis van 50 microgram werkzaam bij mensen, dat is een hoeveelheid van 0,00005 gram! Er bestaan geen andere chemische verbindingen die effecten teweeg kunnen brengen in kleinere doses dan deze. Dit houdt in dat er in theorie uit een pure gram LSD tienduizend doses a 100 micrgram kunnen worden gehaald. Dit aspect van LSD, de wankele verhouding van de fysieke massa ten opzichte van de marktwaarde, is de belangrijkste verklarende factor voor de bliksemsnelle stijging van LSD-gebruik en de daaropvolgende onderdrukking ervan. LSD is geur- en kleurloos en kan in vloeistoffen gemengd worden; onder een postzegel kunnen honderden doses worden verstopt. Gevangenismuren vormden geen belemmering voor LSD; landsgrenzen evenmin. Mits de benodigde technologie aanwezig was, kon het op iedere plaats worden bereid en van daaruit onmiddellijk overal naartoe worden vervoerd. Miljoenen doses LSD konden worden gemaakt door slechts een paar mensen, wat dan ook gebeurde. Rond deze producenten vormden zich enorme markten. Het ontstaan van criminele syndicaten, een eerste vereiste voor fascisme, liet evenmin lang op zich wachten.

Maar LSD is meer dan een handelsartikel – het is een product dat de maatschappelijke machinerie ontbindt waardoorheen het zich beweegt. Dit effect heeft alle politieke groeperingen die hebben geprobeerd om LSD te gebruiken om een politieke agenda naar voren te schuiven, gedwarsboomd.

Een psychologisch deconditionerend middel is per definitie gekant tegen iedere vorm van programma of agenda. Toen de diverse partijen die hadden geprobeerd om de situatie onder controle te krijgen, dit eenmaal inzagen, konden ze het over een ding met elkaar eens worden: Hoe en door wie dit werd gedaan, is een levendig verhaal dat al eens eerder verteld is, met name door Jay Stevens in Storming Heaven en door Martin Lee en Bruce Shlain in Acid Dreams.

Tegen het eind van de jaren zestig was het psychedelische onderzoek totaal weggemoffeld – niet alleen in de Verenigde Staten, maar over de gehele wereld. En dit kon gebeuren in weerwil van de enorme opwinding die al deze ontdekkingen hadden teweeggebracht onder psychologen en andere onderzoekers van het menselijk gedrag, een opwinding die te vergelijken was met de gevoelens die door de gemeenschap van de natuurwetenschappers raasden bij het nieuws van de atoomsplitsing. Maar waar de kracht van het atoom, die kon omgezet worden in wapens voor massale vernietiging, fascinerend was voor het establishment van de dominators, tekende de psychedelische ervaring zich in hun ogen af als een onheilspellende, peilloze afgrond.

Het nieuwe tijdperk brak aan, ondanks het feit dat een aantal onderzoekers LSD nog altijd gebruikte om aandoeningen te genezen die voorheen als onbehamdelbaar werden beschouwd. De Canadese psychiaters Abram Hoffer en Humphrey Osmond tabelleerden de resultaten van elf afzonderlijke onderzoeken naar alcoholisme, en concludeerden dat 45 procent van de patienten die met LSD waren behandeld vooruitgang vertoonden. Er werden veelbelovende resultaten geboekt in pogingen om schizofrenen, autistische kinderen en ernstig depressieve mensen te behandelen. Veel van deze bevindingen werden fel bekritiseerd nadat LSD illegaal werd, maar er werden nooit betere experimenten ontworpen, en door de illegaliteit van LSD kon het werk nooit worden herhaald. De veelbelovende nieuwe toepassingen van LSD binnen de psychiatrie om pijn, verslaving, alcoholisme en depressie bij terminale ziekten te behandelen werden tot sint-juttenmis uitgesteld.

Ontmoetingen met een opmerkelijke wereldziel, pag 288-289:

De diepgaande psychedelische ervaring biedt niet alleen de mogelijkheid van een wereld waarin gezonde mensen in harmonie met de aarde en met elkaar leven. De ervaring belooft ook een groots avontuur, betrokkenheid bij iets totaal onverwachts – een nabijgelegen, onbekend universum dat wemelt van leven en schoonheid. Vraag me niet waar dat dan is; op dit moment kunnen we alleen zeggen: niet hier en niet daar. We moeten nog steeds onze onwetendheid erkennen omtrent de aard van de geest, en hoe de wereld precies is ontstaan, en wat die dan is. Duizenden en duizenden jaren lang hebben wij ervan gedroomd om deze dingen te begrijpen, en we hebben daarin gefaald. Gefaald, tenzij we ons die andere mogelijkheid herinneren: de mogelijkheid van het Volledig Andere.

Sommige misleide zielen speuren het uitspansel af naar ons welgezinde vliegende schotels die in de aardse geschiedenis zullen ingrijpen en ons naar het aards paradijs zullen brengen; anderen prediken bevrijding terwijl ze gezeten zijn aan de voeten van diverse rishi’s, roshi’s, geysheys en goeroes. Degenen die op zoek zijn naar antwoorden kunnen zich beter verdiepen in het werk van botanici, de antropologen en de chemici die de sjamanistische hallucinogenen hebben gelokaliseerd en gekenmerkt. Dankzij hen hebben wij nu een instrument in handen voor de bevrijding van B.V. Mensheid. Het is een geweldig instrument, maar het moet wel worden gebruikt. Onze verslavingen door de eeuwen heen, van suiker tot cocaine en televisie, zijn een rusteloos zoeken naar hetgeen dat van ons is losgescheurd in het paradijs. Het antwoord is gevonden. Het hoeft niet langer te worden gezocht. Het is al gevonden.

Nigerian soldiers guarding Chevron oil rigs billed the company for $109.25 a day after they allegedly attacked two villages in the volatile country, killing four people and setting fire to homes.

The company paid.

The money was requested in a small invoice -- stamped with Chevron's logo and the name of its Nigerian subsidiary -- that surfaced this year as part of a lawsuit against the San Ramon oil giant. Residents of the Opia and Ikenyan villages are suing Chevron in San Francisco's federal court, trying to hold the firm responsible for the fatal attacks in 1999.

In cramped handwriting, the invoice asks for 15,000 naira to pay 23 soldiers who responded to an alleged assault by men from Opia against a Chevron oil rig, called Searrex. Villagers said they had gone to the rig to meet with Chevron representatives and returned home to see soldiers open fire from a hovering helicopter.

You only need to drive for an hour from the centre of Los Angeles before you see them. From a distance they look like coloured markers in the fields. But then, as you draw closer, you realise they are moving. Gradually they take on the form of figures, bobbing up and down in the rows of crops, as if hiding from some unseen sniper. Hunched down in the fields, caps on their heads, cloths draped over their necks, slowly, very slowly, they make their way up and down the fields.

These are the labourers, the unseen and unacknowledged force behind the wealth of California's agriculture. They are all Latin Americans, most of them from Mexico. And many of them are "illegals", in the parlance of the time, undocumented migrants, illegally employed by legal Californian companies. Many of the estimated 11 million undocumented aliens in the US work in agriculture, picking oranges in Florida, strawberries in California, and everything in between. Without them, there would be little to show for US agriculture.

So what is the theory, then?

. Think of a guitar string that has been tuned by stretching the string under tension across the guitar. Depending on how the string is plucked and how much tension is in the string, different musical notes will be created by the string. These musical notes could be said to be excitation modes of that guitar string under tension.
. In a similar manner, in string theory, the elementary particles we observe in particle accelerators could be thought of as the "musical notes" or excitation modes of elementary strings.
. In string theory, as in guitar playing, the string must be stretched under tension in order to become excited. However, the strings in string theory are floating in spacetime, they aren't tied down to a guitar. Nonetheless, they have tension. The string tension in string theory is denoted by the quantity 1/(2 p a'), where a' is pronounced "alpha prime"and is equal to the square of the string length scale.
. If string theory is to be a theory of quantum gravity, then the average size of a string should be somewhere near the length scale of quantum gravity, called the Planck length, which is about 10-33 centimeters, or about a millionth of a billionth of a billionth of a billionth of a centimeter. Unfortunately, this means that strings are way too small to see by current or expected particle physics technology (or financing!!) and so string theorists must devise more clever methods to test the theory than just looking for little strings in particle experiments.
. String theories are classified according to whether or not the strings are required to be closed loops, and whether or not the particle spectrum includes fermions. In order to include fermions in string theory, there must be a special kind of symmetry called supersymmetry, which means for every boson (particle that transmits a force) there is a corresponding fermion (particle that makes up matter). So supersymmetry relates the particles that transmit forces to the particles that make up matter.
. Supersymmetric partners to to currently known particles have not been observed in particle experiments, but theorists believe this is because supersymmetric particles are too massive to be detected at current accelerators. Particle accelerators could be on the verge of finding evidence for high energy supersymmetry in the next decade. Evidence for supersymmetry at high energy would be compelling evidence that string theory was a good mathematical model for Nature at the smallest distance scales.

The real mass media are basically trying to divert people. Let them do something else, but don’t bother us (us being the people who run the show). Let them get interested in professional sports, for example. Let everybody be crazed about professional sports or sex scandals or the personalities and their problems or something like that. Anything, as long as it isn’t serious. Of course, the serious stuff is for the big guys. "We" take care of that.

What are the elite media, the agenda-setting ones? The New York Times and CBS, for example. Well, first of all, they are major, very profitable, corporations. Furthermore, most of them are either linked to, or outright owned by, much bigger corporations, like General Electric, Westinghouse, and so on. They are way up at the top of the power structure of the private economy which is a very tyrannical structure. Corporations are basically tyrannies, hierarchic, controled from above. If you don’t like what they are doing you get out. The major media are just part of that system.

What about their institutional setting? Well, that’s more or less the same. What they interact with and relate to is other major power centers—the government, other corporations, or the universities. Because the media are a doctrinal system they interact closely with the universities. Say you are a reporter writing a story on Southeast Asia or Africa, or something like that. You’re supposed to go over to the big university and find an expert who will tell you what to write, or else go to one of the foundations, like Brookings Institute or American Enterprise Institute and they will give you the words to say. These outside institutions are very similar to the media.

If you’ve read George Orwell’s Animal Farm which he wrote in the mid-1940s, it was a satire on the Soviet Union, a totalitarian state. It was a big hit. Everybody loved it. Turns out he wrote an introduction to Animal Farm which was suppressed. It only appeared 30 years later. Someone had found it in his papers. The introduction to Animal Farm was about "Literary Censorship in England" and what it says is that obviously this book is ridiculing the Soviet Union and its totalitarian structure. But he said England is not all that different. We don’t have the KGB on our neck, but the end result comes out pretty much the same. People who have independent ideas or who think the wrong kind of thoughts are cut out.

He talks a little, only two sentences, about the institutional structure. He asks, why does this happen? Well, one, because the press is owned by wealthy people who only want certain things to reach the public. The other thing he says is that when you go through the elite education system, when you go through the proper schools in Oxford, you learn that there are certain things it’s not proper to say and there are certain thoughts that are not proper to have. That is the socialization role of elite institutions and if you don’t adapt to that, you’re usually out. Those two sentences more or less tell the story.

When you critique the media and you say, look, here is what Anthony Lewis or somebody else is writing, they get very angry. They say, quite correctly, "nobody ever tells me what to write. I write anything I like. All this business about pressures and constraints is nonsense because I’m never under any pressure." Which is completely true, but the point is that they wouldn’t be there unless they had already demonstrated that nobody has to tell them what to write because they are going say the right thing. If they had started off at the Metro desk, or something, and had pursued the wrong kind of stories, they never would have made it to the positions where they can now say anything they like. The same is mostly true of university faculty in the more ideological disciplines. They have been through the socialization system.

Okay, you look at the structure of that whole system. What do you expect the news to be like? Well, it’s pretty obvious. Take the New York Times. It’s a corporation and sells a product. The product is audiences. They don’t make money when you buy the newspaper. They are happy to put it on the worldwide web for free. They actually lose money when you buy the newspaper. But the audience is the product. The product is privileged people, just like the people who are writing the newspapers, you know, top-level decision-making people in society. You have to sell a product to a market, and the market is, of course, advertisers (that is, other businesses). Whether it is television or newspapers, or whatever, they are selling audiences. Corporations sell audiences to other corporations. In the case of the elite media, it’s big businesses.

In just a few short years the Internet has changed the way many people communicate. The technology is immediate, cost effective and surprisingly earth-friendly... NO printing... NO postage... NO wasted paper....

We are using this highly flexible technology to serve as a focal point and gathering place. We are creating an international network of like-minded individuals who enjoy sharing their ideas and insights about "simple living" (a.k.a. "voluntary simplicity").

Since 1985 we dreamed of every possible way to share information about the simple living movement with others; however, we did not act upon those dreams until 1994 when we discovered the "web" in its infancy.

Prior to the wide-spread use of the Internet, we simply could not come to terms with the expense (waste of natural resources) required to design, produce and distribute printed materials. We simply couldn't justify contributing to the existing mail order glut in the name of "saving the earth from ourselves."

Subcultural Relevance

Obviously, Bataille has extreme relevance as a nexus point for the intellectual and artistic life of mid-20th century France. Much of his "achievement" can only be understood inside this historical context. In this way, the simplest method of locating Bataille is to place him dead square in the middle of a continuum between Fascism and Surrealism. And, humorously enough, perhaps this crude position is the only way to make sense of his writing, especially his "transgressive fictions." But while this might be helpful to closet Sadean Catholics and the all too common crypto-fascist French neurotics, it doesn't begin to explain Bataille's increasing valence within the last few decades of this country.

It is Bataille's philosophy of excess and exuberance, his open acknowledgement of shame in the face of the extreme pornographic displays of sex and death, his sense of esoteric humor and history that make him so appropriate to this world we live in. Look around at all the weak-kneed "erotic philosophers" and judge who backs down from the abyssmal truth of the matter. The same goes for the vulturous "death therapists." Here is Bataille's relevance inside the subculture: with one foot in the flesh of the orgy and one in the bones of the grave, he speaks of the dark truths central to all human experience. And, most importantly, he embraces it, says YES to it, even though it would annihilate him. And beyond of all of his failings, this still stands. The corpse of Bataille never smelled sweeter.

For example, although nanoscale organisms have been identified in geological formations and in the human body since the late 1980s, few projects have examined the implications for human or natural ecology or for environmental chemistry. NASA is studying it, as are the universities of Texas, McGill (Canada), Regensburg (Germany), Kuopio (Finland), Melbourne (Australia), and others. Yet, few if any EPA or FEMA projects have taken advantage of such research. Nor do they examine newly discovered megascale anomalies such as the naturally induced climate flip of circa A.D. 536 or the giant tsunami that inundated the Pacific Northwest in 1700.

Such events would certainly disrupt natural ecosystems and human society if they recurred-and the evidence suggests that they will. Yet no EPA, FEMA, or environmentalist initiative examines how nanotechnologies might be used for adapting to them.

They Rule

Overview
They Rule aims to provide a glimpse of some of the relationships of the US ruling class. It takes as its focus the boards of some of the most powerful U.S. companies, which share many of the same directors. Some individuals sit on 5, 6 or 7 of the top 500 companies. It allows users to browse through these interlocking directories and run searches on the boards and companies. A user can save a map of connections complete with their annotations and email links to these maps to others. They Rule is a starting point for research about these powerful individuals and corporations.

Context
A few companies control much of the economy and oligopolies exert control in nearly every sector of the economy. The people who head up these companies swap on and off the boards from one company to another, and in and out of government committees and positions. These people run the most powerful institutions on the planet, and we have almost no say in who they are. This is not a conspiracy. They are proud to rule. And yet these connections of power are not always visible to the public eye.

Karl Marx once called this ruling class a 'band of hostile brothers.' They stand against each other in the competitve struggle for the continued accumulation of their capital, but they stand together as a family supporting their interests in perpetuating the profit system as whole. Protecting this system can require the cover of a 'legitimate' force - and this is the role that is played by the state. An understanding of this system can not be gleaned from looking at the inter-personal relations of this class alone, but rather how they stand in relation to other classes in society. Hopefully They Rule will raise larger questions about the structure of our society and in whose benefit it is run.

Theoretical Foundation for Jung’s “Mandala Symbolism”

Abstract.

The mandala as psychological phenomena appear spontaneously in dreams, in certain states of conflict, and in cases of schizophrenia.

The main goal of this presentation is to give a theoretical explanation and a mathematical model for computer simulation of mandalas, based on the mechanisms of biochemical reactions in a human brain and on discrete chaotic dynamics.

The discrete dynamics of physicochemical reactions is a new theory based on the analogy between the p -Theorem of the theory of dimensionality, the principle of maximum entropy and the stoichiometry of complex chemical reactions.

Application of this theory to the spatiotemporal behavior of complex biochemical reactions has revealed symmetric patterns similar to the mandalas(link to mandals pictures) presented by C.G.Jung in his book "Mandala Symbolism". This theory has also been shown to possess the ability to generate complex oscillations, that may be used for mathematical modeling of EEG and ECG and of living systems dynamics in general.

According to the results obtained, when the human brain is generating mandalas, it can be regarded as a complex “biochemical reactor” that creates different images reflecting its internal state (or the distribution of chemicals and their biochemical interactions) and all these processes based on the laws of nature.

Mandala is Sanskrit for circle, polygon, community, connection.
The Mandala is a symbol of man or woman in the world, a support for the meditating person.
The mandala is often illustrated as a palace with four gates, facing the four corners of the Earth.

The Mandala shown here is connected with the Buddha Vajrasattva, who symbolises the original crystalline purity.
In the centre is a lotus blossom with eight petals, resting on a bed of jewels.
In the next place are the walls of the palace with gates towards the four corners of the earth.
The gates are guarded by four angry doorkeepers.
Before the meditating person arrives at the gates, she must, however, pass the four outer circles: the purifying fire of wisdom, the vajra circle, the circle with the eight tombs, the lotus circle.

In Tibetan Buddhism, a mandala is an imaginary palace that is contemplated during meditation. Each object in the palace has significance, representing some aspect of wisdom or reminding the meditator of some guiding principle. Tradition dictates the shapes, sizes and colors of these objects. There are many different mandalas, each with different lessons to teach. Most mandalas contain a host of deities as well as inanimate objects.

DiCarlo: You have been a major researcher of non-ordinary states of consciousness for the past thirty-six years. What got you interested at first?

Grof: My interest in this field of research started when I volunteered for an LSD experiment in Prague, Czechoslovakia. My original training was in Freudian psychoanalysis and reading Freud inspired me to study medicine and become a psychiatrist. However, early in my professional career, I developed a deep conflict in relation to psychoanalysis. I continued to be very excited about psychoanalytic theory which seemed to offer brilliant insights into the human psyche and fascinating explanations for various otherwise obscure problems, such as the symbolism of dreams, neurotic symptoms, religion, and what Freud called "psychopathology of everyday life". But I became increasingly disappointed with psychoanalysis as a practical tool of therapy.

Although our primary focus is on the web site, we also provide research and data for other harm reduction, health, and educational organizations.

Although the risks and problems are widely discussed, it's also clear that psychoactive plants and chemicals have played a positive role in many people's lives. As our culture struggles with integrating the increasing variety and availability of these substances into its political and social structures, new educational models are clearly needed. Erowid is founded on the belief that a healthy relationship with psychoactives is one grounded in balance, where use is part of an active, intellectual, physical, and spiritual life.

Good ideas are worth money. So why are hard headed operators giving them away for free? Join our experiment to find out says Graham Lawton

IF YOU'VE BEEN to a computer show in recent months you might have seen it: a shiny silver drinks can with a ring-pull logo and the words "opencola" on the side. Inside is a fizzy drink that tastes very much like Coca-Cola. Or is it Pepsi?

There's something else written on the can, though, which sets the drink apart. It says "check out the source at opencola.com". Go to that Web address and you'll see something that's not available on Coca-Cola's website, or Pepsi's--the recipe for cola. For the first time ever, you can make the real thing in your own home.

OpenCola is the world's first "open source" consumer product. By calling it open source, its manufacturer is saying that instructions for making it are freely available. Anybody can make the drink, and anyone can modify and improve on the recipe as long as they, too, release their recipe into the public domain. As a way of doing business it's rather unusual--the Coca-Cola Company doesn't make a habit of giving away precious commercial secrets. But that's the point.

OpenCola is the most prominent sign yet that a long-running battle between rival philosophies in software development has spilt over into the rest of the world. What started as a technical debate over the best way to debug computer programs is developing into a political battle over the ownership of knowledge and how it is used, between those who put their faith in the free circulation of ideas and those who prefer to designate them "intellectual property". No one knows what the outcome will be. But in a world of growing opposition to corporate power, restrictive intellectual property rights and globalisation, open source is emerging as a possible alternative, a potentially potent means of fighting back. And you're helping to test its value right now.

The open source movement originated in 1984 when computer scientist Richard Stallman quit his job at MIT and set up the Free Software Foundation. His aim was to create high-quality software that was freely available to everybody. Stallman's beef was with commercial companies that smother their software with patents and copyrights and keep the source code--the original program, written in a computer language such as C++--a closely guarded secret. Stallman saw this as damaging. It generated poor-quality, bug-ridden software. And worse, it choked off the free flow of ideas. Stallman fretted that if computer scientists could no longer learn from one another's code, the art of programming would stagnate (New Scientist, 12 December 1998, p 42).

Stallman's move resonated round the computer science community and now there are thousands of similar projects. The star of the movement is Linux, an operating system created by Finnish student Linus Torvalds in the early 1990s and installed on around 18 million computers worldwide.

What sets open source software apart from commercial software is the fact that it's free, in both the political and the economic sense. If you want to use a commercial product such as Windows XP or Mac OS X you have to pay a fee and agree to abide by a licence that stops you from modifying or sharing the software. But if you want to run Linux or another open source package, you can do so without paying a penny--although several companies will sell you the software bundled with support services. You can also modify the software in any way you choose, copy it and share it without restrictions. This freedom acts as an open invitation--some say challenge--to its users to make improvements. As a result, thousands of volunteers are constantly working on Linux, adding new features and winkling out bugs. Their contributions are reviewed by a panel and the best ones are added to Linux. For programmers, the kudos of a successful contribution is its own reward. The result is a stable, powerful system that adapts rapidly to technological change. Linux is so successful that even IBM installs it on the computers it sells.

To maintain this benign state of affairs, open source software is covered by a special legal instrument called the General Public License. Instead of restricting how the software can be used, as a standard software license does, the GPL--often known as a "copyleft"--grants as much freedom as possible (see http://www.fsf.org/licenses/gpl.html). Software released under the GPL (or a similar copyleft licence) can be copied, modified and distributed by anyone, as long as they, too, release it under a copyleft. That restriction is crucial, because it prevents the material from being co-opted into later proprietary products. It also makes open source software different from programs that are merely distributed free of charge. In FSF's words, the GPL "makes it free and guarantees it remains free".

Open source has proved a very successful way of writing software. But it has also come to embody a political stand--one that values freedom of expression, mistrusts corporate power, and is uncomfortable with private ownership of knowledge. It's "a broadly libertarian view of the proper relationship between individuals and institutions", according to open source guru Eric Raymond.

But it's not just software companies that lock knowledge away and release it only to those prepared to pay. Every time you buy a CD, a book, a copy of New Scientist, even a can of Coca-Cola, you're forking out for access to someone else's intellectual property. Your money buys you the right to listen to, read or consume the contents, but not to rework them, or make copies and redistribute them. No surprise, then, that people within the open source movement have asked whether their methods would work on other products. As yet no one's sure--but plenty of people are trying it.

Take OpenCola. Although originally intended as a promotional tool to explain open source software, the drink has taken on a life of its own. The Toronto-based OpenCola company has become better known for the drink than the software it was supposed to promote. Laird Brown, the company's senior strategist, attributes its success to a widespread mistrust of big corporations and the "proprietary nature of almost everything". A website selling the stuff has shifted 150,000 cans. Politically minded students in the US have started mixing up the recipe for parties.

OpenCola is a happy accident and poses no real threat to Coke or Pepsi, but elsewhere people are deliberately using the open source model to challenge entrenched interests. One popular target is the music industry. At the forefront of the attack is the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a San Francisco group set up to defend civil liberties in the digital society. In April of last year, the EFF published a model copyleft called the Open Audio License (OAL). The idea is to let musicians take advantage of digital music's properties--ease of copying and distribution--rather than fighting against them. Musicians who release music under an OAL consent to their work being freely copied, performed, reworked and reissued, as long as these new products are released under the same licence. They can then rely on "viral distribution" to get heard. "If the people like the music, they will support the artist to ensure the artist can continue to make music," says Robin Gross of the EFF.

It's a little early to judge whether the OAL will capture imaginations in the same way as OpenCola. But it's already clear that some of the strengths of open source software simply don't apply to music. In computing, the open source method lets users improve software by eliminating errors and inefficient bits of code, but it's not obvious how that might happen with music. In fact, the music is not really "open source" at all. The files posted on the OAL music website http://www.openmusicregistry.org so far are all MP3s and Ogg Vorbises--formats which allow you to listen but not to modify.

It's also not clear why any mainstream artists would ever choose to release music under an OAL. Many bands objected to the way Napster members circulated their music behind their backs, so why would they now allow unrestricted distribution, or consent to strangers fiddling round with their music? Sure enough, you're unlikely to have heard of any of the 20 bands that have posted music on the registry. It's hard to avoid the conclusion that Open Audio amounts to little more than an opportunity for obscure artists to put themselves in the shop window.

The problems with open music, however, haven't put people off trying open source methods elsewhere. Encyclopedias, for example, look like fertile ground. Like software, they're collaborative and modular, need regular upgrading, and improve with peer review. But the first attempt, a free online reference called Nupedia, hasn't exactly taken off. Two years on, only 25 of its target 60,000 articles have been completed. "At the current rate it will never be a large encyclopedia," says editor-in-chief Larry Sanger. The main problem is that the experts Sanger wants to recruit to write articles have little incentive to participate. They don't score academic brownie points in the same way software engineers do for upgrading Linux, and Nupedia can't pay them.

It's a problem that's inherent to most open source products: how do you get people to chip in? Sanger says he's exploring ways to make money out of Nupedia while preserving the freedom of its content. Banner adverts are a possibility. But his best hope is that academics start citing Nupedia articles so authors can earn academic credit.

There's another possibility: trust the collective goodwill of the open source community. A year ago, frustrated by the treacle-like progress of Nupedia, Sanger started another encyclopedia named Wikipedia (the name is taken from open source Web software called WikiWiki that allows pages to be edited by anyone on the Web). It's a lot less formal than Nupedia: anyone can write or edit an article on any topic, which probably explains the entries on beer and Star Trek. But it also explains its success. Wikipedia already contains 19,000 articles and is acquiring several thousand more each month. "People like the idea that knowledge can and should be freely distributed and developed," says Sanger. Over time, he reckons, thousands of dabblers should gradually fix any errors and fill in any gaps in the articles until Wikipedia evolves into an authoritative encyclopedia with hundreds of thousands of entries.

Another experiment that's proved its worth is the OpenLaw project at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School. Berkman lawyers specialise in cyberlaw--hacking, copyright, encryption and so on--and the centre has strong ties with the EFF and the open source software community. In 1998 faculty member Lawrence Lessig, now at Stanford Law School, was asked by online publisher Eldritch Press to mount a legal challenge to US copyright law. Eldritch takes books whose copyright has expired and publishes them on the Web, but new legislation to extend copyright from 50 to 70 years after the author's death was cutting off its supply of new material. Lessig invited law students at Harvard and elsewhere to help craft legal arguments challenging the new law on an online forum, which evolved into OpenLaw.

Normal law firms write arguments the way commercial software companies write code. Lawyers discuss a case behind closed doors, and although their final product is released in court, the discussions or "source code" that produced it remain secret. In contrast, OpenLaw crafts its arguments in public and releases them under a copyleft. "We deliberately used free software as a model," says Wendy Selzer, who took over OpenLaw when Lessig moved to Stanford. Around 50 legal scholars now work on Eldritch's case, and OpenLaw has taken other cases, too.

"The gains are much the same as for software," Selzer says. "Hundreds of people scrutinise the 'code' for bugs, and make suggestions how to fix it. And people will take underdeveloped parts of the argument, work on them, then patch them in." Armed with arguments crafted in this way, OpenLaw has taken Eldritch's case--deemed unwinnable at the outset--right through the system and is now seeking a hearing in the Supreme Court.

There are drawbacks, though. The arguments are in the public domain right from the start, so OpenLaw can't spring a surprise in court. For the same reason, it can't take on cases where confidentiality is important. But where there's a strong public interest element, open sourcing has big advantages. Citizens' rights groups, for example, have taken parts of OpenLaw's legal arguments and used them elsewhere. "People use them on letters to Congress, or put them on flyers," Selzer says.

The open content movement is still at an early stage and it's hard to predict how far it will spread. "I'm not sure there are other areas where open source would work," says Sanger. "If there were, we might have started it ourselves." Eric Raymond has also expressed doubts. In his much-quoted 1997 essay, The Cathedral and the Bazaar, he warned against applying open source methods to other products. "Music and most books are not like software, because they don't generally need to be debugged or maintained," he wrote. Without that need, the products gain little from others' scrutiny and reworking, so there's little benefit in open sourcing. "I do not want to weaken the winning argument for open sourcing software by tying it to a potential loser," he wrote.

But Raymond's views have now shifted subtly. "I'm more willing to admit that I might talk about areas other than software someday," he told New Scientist. "But not now." The right time will be once open source software has won the battle of ideas, he says. He expects that to happen around 2005.

And so the experiment goes on. As a contribution to it, New Scientist has agreed to issue this article under a copyleft. That means you can copy it, redistribute it, reprint it in whole or in part, and generally play around with it as long as you, too, release your version under a copyleft and abide by the other terms and conditions in the licence. One reason for doing so is that by releasing it under a copyleft, we can print the recipe for OpenCola without violating its copyleft. If nothing else, that demonstrates the power of the copyleft to spread itself. But there's another reason, too: to see what happens. To my knowledge this is the first magazine article published under a copyleft. Who knows what the outcome will be? Perhaps the article will disappear without a trace. Perhaps it will be photocopied, redistributed, re-edited, rewritten, cut and pasted onto websites, handbills and articles all over the world. I don't know--but that's the point. It's not up to me any more. The decision belongs to all of us.

The years 1927-37 were critical for artists in Germany. In 1927, the National Socialist Society for German Culture was formed. The aim of this organization was to halt the "corruption of art" and inform the people about the relationship between race and art. By 1933, the terms "Jewish," "Degenerate," and "Bolshevik" were in common use to describe almost all modern art.

In 1937, Nazi officials purged German museums of works the Party considered to be degenerate. From the thousands of works removed, 650 were chosen for a special exhibit of Entartete Kunst. The exhibit opened in Munich and then traveled to eleven other cities in Germany and Austria. In each installation, the works were poorly hung and surrounded by graffiti and hand written labels mocking the artists and their creations. Over three million visitors attended making it the first "blockbuster" exhibition.

Our intent is to give teachers a framework to follow for use in a Holocaust unit of study. The philosophy behind these activities is based on constructivist pedagogy, brain-based learning and the awareness of the theory of multiple intelligences. We hope teachers will use them and build on them to fit the needs of students, taking into account their age, maturity, and ability levels. We strongly urge teachers to read and reread the Guidelines for Teaching the Holocaust published by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum before designing activities or using the ones we offer in A Teacher's Guide to the Holocaust . The suggestions and cautions the Holocaust Museum offers are important and invaluable in delivering Holocaust instruction. The sensitivity of the subject matter requires careful consideration when designing curriculum and guiding students in presentations and research.
